A note on significant wave height

Ocean Engineering, 1996
In this note conservative bounds for significant crest height and amplitude obtained from the crossing intensity of a sea are presented. For Gaussian models of a sea level, the Rayleigh approximation for the distributions of amplitude and crest height is proved to provide conservative values for the expected significant wave characteristics.

Forecasting Significant Wave Height using RNN-LSTM Models

2020 4th International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Control Systems (ICICCS), 2020
Forecasting significant wave height (SWH) is necessary for many coastal and ocean engineering applications. Earlier, complex numerical models for forecasting SWH were used which was resource-intensive and computationally expensive. Currently, advanced machine learning approaches such as Deep Neural Networks are widely used in many applications that ...

Modelling significant wave height distributions with quantile functions for estimation of extreme wave heights

Ocean Engineering, 2012
Abstract This paper starts by introducing extreme wave height analysis using quantile functions, which are an alternative to the classical approaches to model long term maxima or extreme values. The long-term distribution of significant wave heights from four locations are modelled with Davies, 3-parameter Weibull, generalized extreme value ( GEV ...

Estimation of significant wave height and wave height density function using satellite altimeter data

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1979
A technique for estimating the ocean surface roughness probability density function from satellite altimeter data is presented. Results from the application of the technique to Geos 3 altimeter data demonstrate its ability to detect both large‐scale and small‐scale structural deviations from the Gaussian distribution. Knowledge of the surface roughness

Encounter Probability of Significant Wave Height [PDF]

open access: possible, 1998
The determination of the design wave height (often given as the significant wave height) is usually based on statistical analysis of long-term extreme wave height measurement or hindcast. The result of such extreme wave height analysis is often given as the design wave height corresponding to a chosen return period.

Significant Wave Height Retrieval from Gaofen-3 Wave Mode Images

IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018
Significant wave height $(H_{s})$ , is an important parameter, represented as the integration of directional wave spectra. Although many researchers have directly extracted $H_{s}$ from SAR images and got a great accuracy of retrieval, those approaches are not suitable for GF-3 SAR data. In this paper, we propose an empirical approach for SAR $H_{s}

Decadal variability of global ocean significant wave height

Journal of Ocean University of China, 2015
This paper presents the long-term climate changes of significant wave height (Hs) in 1958–2001 over the entire global ocean using the 45-year European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis (ERA-40) wave data. The linear trends in Hs and regional and seasonal differences of the linear trends for Hs were calculated.

Estimating Nearshore Significant Wave Height for Irregular Waves

2023
Design curves for predicting nearshore significant wave height for irregular wave conditions, given deepwater wave conditions and the nearshore bottom slope, are presented. Examples of the curves. used are given. The design curves were developed using the analytical model of Goda (1975).

Predictions of Extreme Values of Significant Wave Height

Volume 2: Safety and Reliability; Pipeline Technology, 2003
This paper provides an overview of different methods of extrapolating environmental data to low probability levels based on the extreme value theory. It discusses the Annual Maxima method and the Peak Over Threshold method, using unified terminology and notation.

Neural Networks Based Simulation of Significant Wave Height

Volume 4: Materials Technology; Ocean Engineering, 2007
A large number of ocean activities call for real time or on-line forecasting of wind wave characteristics including significant wave height (Hs). The work reported in this paper uses statistics, and artificial neural networks trained with an optimization technique called simulated annealing to estimate the parameters of a probability distribution ...
