Aerogels – Production, Properties and Applications
Aerogels are highly porous sol-gel derived solids. Their properties, which are extremely fascinating as well as very promising for a large number of applications, are due to their nanostructure.

The cluster model: A hierarchically-ordered assemblage of random-packing spheres for modelling microstructure of porous materials [PDF]
A new structural model based on the premises widely used for describing the structure of random materials, and especially aerogels, is introduced. Aerogels are described as an assemblage of randomly-packed spheres in several hierarchically-ordered levels.

The size of nanopores in thermally treated samples of silica aerogels was determined by ortho-positronium lifetime measurements at room temperature. The annealing of samples in the temperature region of 300−800◦C does not make substantial changes in pore size felt by positronium.

Preparation and Characterization of Silica Aerogel Microspheres [PDF]
Silica aerogel microspheres based on alkali silica sol were synthesized using the emulsion method. The experimental results revealed that the silica aerogel microspheres (4–20 µm in diameter) were mesoporous solids with an average pore diameter ranging from 6 to 35 nm.

Silica-Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Aerogels Nanostructure Modelling
The work is devoted to the study and modelling of the internal nanostructure of silica-resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogels. These aerogels are highly porous (up to 98 %) functional materials with a high specific surface area, low thermal conductivity, and ...

Deformation of Silica Aerogel During Fluid Adsorption
Aerogels are very compliant materials - even small stresses can lead to large deformations. In this paper we present measurements of the linear deformation of high porosity aerogels during adsorption of low surface tension fluids, performed using a ...

Effects of aerogel-like disorder on the critical behavior of O(m)-vector models. Recent simulations and experimental evidences [PDF]
We review some results on the effect of a specific type of quenched disorder on well known O(m)-vector models in three dimension. Evidences of changes of criticality in both systems, when confined in aerogel pores, are briefly referenced. The 3DXY model (

Novel bioactive materials: silica aerogel and hybrid silica aerogel/pseudowollastonite
Silica aerogel and hybrid silica aerogel/pseudowollastonite materials were synthesized by controlled hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) using also methanol (MeOH) and pseudowollastonite particles. The gels obtained were dried using a novel process based on an ambient pressure drying. Hexane and hexamethyl-disilazane (HMDZ) were the solvents used to

Silica aerogels with tailored chemical functionality
Silica aerogels are highly porous (~95%), predominantly mesoporous (20–50 nm) materials with very high surface area (~800 m2/g), but applications that valorize the chemical properties linked to the high surface area lag behind those that valorize the ...
