AGB and SAGB stars: modelling dust production at solar metallicity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We present dust yields for asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and super--asymptotic giant branch (SAGB) stars of solar metallicity. Stars with initial mass $1.5~M_{\odot} \leq M_{\rm ini} \leq 3~M_{\odot}$ reach the carbon star stage during the AGB phase and ...

The effect of the application of microwaves on the volume, porosity and thermal conductivity of sodium silicate-wollastonite mixtures was studied. The compositional range studied was 20-100 wt% sodium silicate.

The Origin of the Silicate Emission Features in the Seyfert 2 Galaxy, NGC 2110 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGN) predicts silicate emission features at 10 and 18 microns in type 1 AGN, and such features have now been observed in objects ranging from distant QSOs to nearby LINERs. More surprising, however, is the detection of silicate emission in a few type 2 AGN.

The effect of aqueous alteration and metamorphism in the survival of presolar silicate grains in chondrites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Relatively small amounts (typically between 2-200 parts per million) of presolar grains have been preserved in the matrices of chondritic meteorites.

A closer look into close packing: pentacoordinated silicon in a high-pressure polymorph of danburite

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2017
Due to their high technological and geological relevance, silicates are one of the most studied classes of inorganic compounds. Under ambient conditions, the silicon in silicates is almost exclusively coordinated by four oxygen atoms, while high-pressure

Optical properties of non-stoichiometric amorphous silicates with application to circumstellar dust extinction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Optical constants of non-stoichiometric amorphous magnesium-iron silicates are determined. It is demonstrated that these can well reproduce the observed mid-infrared emission spectra of evolved stars. Stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric amorphous magnesium-iron silicate films are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition.
