A silicon-on-insulator slab for topological valley transport
Backscattering is one of the major factors that limit the performance of integrated nanophotonics. Here, He et al. realize topologically protected, robust and unidirectional coupling as well as optical transport on a silicon-on-insulator platform by ...

Accurate Chromatic Dispersion Characterization of Photonic Integrated Circuits
An accurate technique to characterize chromatic dispersion and its slope versus wavelength is reported. The method is based on a heterodyne Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which is immune to thermal phase noise by using a counterpropagating reference beam ...

Design and Measurement of Ring-Gate Single Photon Avalanche Diode With Low Dark Count Rate
Single photon avalanche diodes (SPAD) based on avalanche effect have been widely used in the detection of extremely weak light signals. Conventional SPAD devices manufactured with silicon-based CMOS technology have a high dark count rate (DCR), making it

Subwavelength Silicon Nanophotonics
A new optical waveguide principle is proposed, exploiting subwavelength grating effect. We demonstrate first subwavelength grating waveguides, including practical components such as highly efficient fibre-chip couplers, waveguide crossings and microspectrometer chips.

Nonlinear silicon nanophotonics for mid-infrared applications [PDF]
The silicon nanophotonic wire platform can be applied toward development of integrated optical devices for the generation and processing of mid-infrared light signals. The demonstration of a mid-infrared optical parametric amplifier will be reviewed, and recent work aimed at expanded gain bandwidth and reduced pump power requirements will be presented.

Sunlight-thin nanophotonic monocrystalline silicon solar cells
Introducing nanophotonics into photovoltaics sets the path for scaling down the surface texture of crystalline-silicon solar cells from the micro-to the nanoscale, allowing to further boost the photon absorption while reducing silicon material loss ...

High-confinement high-Q silicon-rich silicon nitride nonlinear microresonators [PDF]
We show our results on high-Q high-confinement microresonators based on the silicon-rich silicon nitride (SiRN) platform, featuring broad anomalous dispersion and an enhanced nonlinear Kerr coefficient with respect to stoichiometric Si3N4 ...

Bandwidth steering in HPC using silicon nanophotonics [PDF]
As bytes-per-FLOP ratios continue to decline, communication is becoming a bottleneck for performance scaling. This paper describes bandwidth steering in HPC using emerging reconfigurable silicon photonic switches. We demonstrate that placing photonics in the lower layers of a hierarchical topology efficiently changes the connectivity and consequently ...
