Creep Mechanisms in Silicon Nitride Ceramics

The mechanism responsible for creep in glass containing ceramics such as silicon nitride are reviewed. It is suggested that two basic creep regimes are observed. In some materials, especially at intermediate temperatures, viscous flow in the amorphous phase controls the creep.

Silicon nitride as advanced ceramic material

The reason for the interest in Si3N4 application is in its mechanical properties at high temperatures: good oxidation resistance, good thermal shock and high wear resistance, high strength, low creep. All of this venders Si3N4 attractive as a new material for high temperature application.
