A Platform for Testing the Biocompatibility of Implants: Silicone Induces a Proinflammatory Response in a 3D Skin Equivalent

open access: yesBiomedicines
Biocompatibility testing of materials is carried out in 2D cell cultures or animal models despite serious limitations. 3D skin equivalents are advanced in vitro models for human skin. Silicone has been shown to be noncytotoxic but capable of eliciting an

Semipermanent sealing of leaks in high vacuum systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
Silicone-rubber adhesive is applied externally to seal hair-line cracks in sections of high vacuum system while system is partially evacuated. No pretreatment of surface is required since adhesive will be drawn into crack while diffusion or ion pump is ...

DNA-coated Functional Oil Droplets

open access: yes, 2017
Many industrial soft materials often include oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions at the core of their formulations. By using tuneable interface stabilizing agents, such emulsions can self-assemble into complex structures.

MagPiezo: A Magnetogenetic Platform for Remote Activation of Endogenous Piezo1 Channels in Endothelial Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MagPiezo enables wireless activation of endogenous Piezo1 channels without genetic modification using 19 nm magnetic nanoparticles and low‐intensity magnetic fields. It generates torque forces at the piconewton scale to trigger mechanotransduction in endothelial cells, standing as a novel platform to interrogate and manipulate Piezo1 activity in vitro.

A Bioresorbable Neural Interface for On‐Demand Thermal Pain Block

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioresorbable, implantable neural electronics provide dynamic, on‐demand thermal modulation of peripheral nerves for safe, drug‐free pain relief. A microscale thin‐film heater and temperature sensor embedded within biodegradable encapsulants enable precise temperature control via real‐time feedback.

3D Printed Soft Robotic Hand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Soft robotics is an emerging industry, largely dominated by companies which hand mold their actuators. Our team set out to design an entirely 3D printed soft robotic hand, powered by a pneumatic control system which will prove both the capabilities of ...

Polymer Infiltration Into SURMOF Channels Enables Hydrophobic and Solid‐Like Slippery Functional Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report a polymer‐chain insertion strategy to fabricate pore‐threaded MOF thin films with precisely tuned surface chemistry and wettability. Grafting n‐alkane chains into the pillared layer Cu2(bdc)2(dabco) MOF thin film's vertical nanochannels enhances water stability, and induces hydrophobicity and lubricant‐free, solid‐like slippery behavior ...

Influence of Si Supplementation on Growth and Some Physiological and Biochemical Parameters in Salt-Stressed Tobacco (Nicotiana rustica L.) Plants [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Sciences, Islamic Republic of Iran, 2014
Tobacco is a salt-sensitive glycophyte crop species. In this work effect of silicone (Si) supplementation (1 mM as Na2SiO3) was studied in Nicotiana rustica L. cv.
