Biological effects of silicone gel sheeting
Wound Repair and Regeneration, 2002Since silicone gels were first used in the treatment of hypertrophic scars (HS) and keloids (K) they have proved useful and safe. Depending on the specific investigation, the application of silicone gels showed improvements in redness, itching, texture and thickness of HS and K in 60% to 100% of cases.

Indentation fracture of silicone gels
Journal of Materials Research, 2009Indentation tests were performed, using a flat punch probe, on silicone gels to induce failure under compression. The silicone gels were formed from networks of vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with molecular weights of 800 and 28,000 g/mol and a sol fraction of trimethylsiloxy-terminated PDMS with molecular weights ranging from 1250 to 139,

Serum Silicon Levels are Elevated in Women with Silicone Gel Implants
1996The metabolic fate of silicone gel leaked into the body from an implant is unknown. In this study, serum from 72 women with silicone gel breast implants and 55 control women was blindly assayed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) for elemental silicon. Samples were processed using materials free of silicon.

Silicone gel breast implants have emerged into the public consciousness over the past several years as the subject of fierce legal and scientific battles brought on by claims of severe adverse health effects resulting from the implants. They join a growing list of products that have spawned product liability litigation—litigation that threatens the ...

The Adjuvant Effect of Silicone Gel and Silicone Elastomer Particles in Rats
1996This study examines the adjuvant properties of silicone oil, silicone gel and silicone elastomer using a foreign antigen, bovine serum albumin (BSA). Seventy male Harlan Sprague-Dawley rats, approximately 250 grams each, were divided into 7 groups: A- incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA) with BSA; B- silicone oil with BSA; C- IFA/silicone oil with BSA; D-

Epidemiology of Silicone-Gel Breast Implants
Epidemiology, 2002Silicone breast implants have been marketed in the United States since 1963. Questions remain unanswered on the safety of these medical devices despite their popularity and availability. In 1992, the Food and Drug Administration restricted the availability of silicone-gel breast implants to women requiring them for reconstruction after breast cancer or

Wounds : a compendium of clinical research and practice, 2018
Keloids and hypertrophic scars are fibroproliferative disorders of dermal tissue after skin injury. Many clinical control studies have reported evidence that silicone gel is effective in preventing and alleviating hypertrophic scarring. Whether silicone gel sheeting prevents hypertrophic scars or keloids requires clear evidence of its clinical ...
