Genome Editing of Silkworms

2023
Silkworm is a lepidopteran insect that has been used as a model for a wide variety of biological studies. The microinjection technique is available, and it is possible to cause transgenesis as well as target gene disruption via the genome editing technique. TALEN-mediated knockout is especially effective in this species.

Microsatellite markers application on domesticated silkworm and wild silkworm

Insect Science, 2005
Twenty-seven sets of simple sequence repeat (SSR) primers were developed through hybridizing of (CA)n, (CT)n and (GT)n and sequencing the positive clones in libraries constructed by using p50 silkworm strain. Of those primer pairs, 26 sets of SSR primers amplified well in two regional wild silkworm strains.

Sex control in silkworms

Nature, 1975
The production of hybrid silkworms yielding a very high proportion of male larvae is of great importance to the silk industry, because of the very much higher yield of silk from males. Strains giving as many as 98% male offspring have now been developed from mutants with translocations of the X chromosome.
