Eye-background contrast as a quantitative marker for pupal age in a forensically important carrion beetle Necrodes littoralis L. (Silphidae)

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
Insect pupae sampled at a death scene may be used to estimate the post-mortem interval. The pupal age is however difficult to estimate, as there are no good quantitative markers for the age of a pupa.

Of Islands on Islands: Natural Habitat Fragmentation Drives Microallopatric Differentiation in the Context of Distinct Biological Assemblages

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
Leveraging a natural experiment provided by arthopod communities in Hawaiian wet forest fragments isolated by lava flows, this study examines the impact of natural habitat fragmentation on species‐equivalent (3% radius OTUs) and haplotype‐equivalent (zOTUs) scales.

Necrophagy in Aspidoscelis lineattissimus (Cope, 1878) and Incilius marmoreus (Wiegmann, 1833) by the Dung Beetle Canthon cyanellus (LeConte, 1859) in a Dry Tropical Forest of Mexico

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 50, Issue 3, March 2025.
ABSTRACT The carcasses of invertebrates and small to medium‐sized vertebrates are the main food source of necrophagous beetles; however, little is known about the consumption of herpetozoan carcasses by these beetles. In this note, we present the first reports of the consumption of a carcass of a lizard, Aspidoscelis lineattissimus (Teiidae) and a ...

Within-guild dietary discrimination from 3-D textural analysis of tooth microwear in insectivorous mammals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Resource exploitation and competition for food are important selective pressures in animal evolution. A number of recent investigations have focused on linkages between diversification, trophic morphology and diet in bats, partly because their roosting ...

Another rejection of the more-individuals-hypothesis: Carrion beetles (Silphidae, Coleoptera) in the Southern Rocky Mountains

open access: yesFrontiers of Biogeography, 2020
Beetles are the most diverse animal clade on the planet, and understanding the mechanisms underlying their diversity patterns is critical to understanding animal biodiversity in general.

Effects of Atmospheric Pollutants on Volatile‐Mediated Insect Ecosystem Services

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 1, January 2025.
This review addresses the current state of knowledge on the effects of air pollutants on volatile organic compound‐mediated insect–plant interactions, which underlie key ecosystem services. Significant knowledge gaps are also identified. While gaseous pollutants reduce the lifetime of individual compounds that act as olfactory cues, gaseous and ...

Resolving the intergeneric phylogeny of the large carrion beetles (Staphylinidae: Silphinae: Silphini)

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 1, Page 168-179, January 2025.
We provide a robust estimate of the phylogeny of the tribe Silphini using five molecular markers and comprehensive taxon sampling across all 12 genera. Our study provides the first biogeographical insight into the origin of the tribe Silphini suggesting a most likely origin across Neotropical, Oriental and/or Australian regions.

Beetle assemblage distribution along edge–forest gradient in a managed oak forest

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 26, Issue 4, Page 496-507, November 2024.
Forest ecotone hosted the highest diversity of trophic groups of beetles. Xylophagous, saproxylophagous and pollenophagous beetles exhibited positive association with the shelterwood strip system. According to the fourth‐corner analysis, phytophagous beetles were positively associated with the closed forest, whereas phloephagous beetles were positively

Adult Diapause in Coleoptera

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, 2012
Recent studies dealing with adult (reproductive) diapause in the Coleoptera are reviewed, as a kind of supplement to the classic compendia. In the first two sections, the general characteristics of adult diapause are described and principal terms ...
