Sim-Exact Methods for Stochastic Optimization: A Complementary Approach to Simheuristics

open access: yesMathematics
This paper introduces a sim-exact methodology for stochastic combinatorial optimization problems. The approach combines exact optimization models with Monte Carlo or discrete-event simulation to evaluate candidate solutions under uncertainty.

Enhancing pharmaceutical cold supply chain: integrating medication synchronization and diverse delivery modes

open access: yesInternational Transactions in Operational Research, Volume 33, Issue 3, Page 2082-2118, May 2026.
Abstract The significance of last‐mile logistics in the healthcare supply chain is growing steadily, especially in pharmacies where the growing prevalence of medication delivery to patients' homes is remarkable. This paper proposes a novel mathematical model for the last‐mile logistics of the pharmaceutical supply chain and optimizes a pharmacy's ...

A Particle Swarm Optimization‐Driven Simulation Framework for Multistage Outpatient Appointment Scheduling With Walk‐Ins and No‐Shows

open access: yesJournal of Engineering, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Outpatient clinics frequently experience delays because walk‐in arrivals and patient no‐shows occur unpredictably, disrupting patient flow and limiting the efficient use of clinical resources. This study improves appointment scheduling under such uncertainty by reducing the time patients spend in the clinic and increasing the number of patients served.

Hybridizing a matheuristic with ALNS for the optimal collection and delivery of medical specimens

open access: yesInternational Transactions in Operational Research, Volume 32, Issue 1, Page 90-116, January 2025.
Abstract The past few years of the COVID‐19 pandemic outbreak have shown that optimal management of medical specimens is a key aspect of healthcare logistics, both for addressing the delivery of perishable items such as vaccines, and for ensuring the timely analysis of swabs and samples. Accordingly, recent optimization literature described the problem

Enriching Simheuristics with Petri net models: potential applications to logistics and supply chain management

open access: yes, 2016
Some classic and complex problems in Operations Research consist of simplified versions of real logistic and supply chain management applications. One common and successful, but approximated approach for coping with these problems considers the system of
