Hybridizing a matheuristic with ALNS for the optimal collection and delivery of medical specimens

open access: yesInternational Transactions in Operational Research, Volume 32, Issue 1, Page 90-116, January 2025.
Abstract The past few years of the COVID‐19 pandemic outbreak have shown that optimal management of medical specimens is a key aspect of healthcare logistics, both for addressing the delivery of perishable items such as vaccines, and for ensuring the timely analysis of swabs and samples. Accordingly, recent optimization literature described the problem

Trends and Advances in Urban Logistics Research: A Systematic Literature Review

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Transportation, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
It is important to establish appropriate performance indicators so that decision‐makers can better determine the best alternatives for sustainable urban freight distribution systems. This literature about urban logistics and routing problems is structured and analyzed through a systematic literature review of a total of 201 papers from 2002 to 2023 ...

A discrete-event simheuristic for enhancing urban mobility

open access: yesSimulation Modelling Practice and Theory
This paper addresses a rich variant of the team orienteering problem under uncertainty to improve urban mobility. Specifically, we conduct a case study using real-world data from urban transportation hubs in Barcelona, gathered from Open Data Barcelona.

Simheuristics for Strategic Workforce Planning at a Busy Airport

open access: yes2024 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC)
Airport demand frequently exceeds capacity. An airport’s capacity bottleneck is often located in its runway system. Other times, it is elsewhere, including the terminal facilities. At one of the busiest UK airports, the subject of this study, the bottleneck is located in the passenger security hall, where staff are employed directly by the airport ...

A Forward–Backward Simheuristic for the Stochastic Capacitated Dispersion Problem

open access: yesMathematics
In an effort to balance the distribution of services across a given territory, dispersion and diversity models typically aim to maximize the minimum distance between any pair of facilities. Specifically, in the capacitated dispersion problem (CDP), each facility has an associated capacity or level of service, and the objective is to select a set of ...

A variable neighborhood search simheuristic for project portfolio selection under uncertainty [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Heuristics, 2018
With limited financial resources, decision-makers in firms and governments face the task of selecting the best portfolio of projects to invest in. As the pool of project proposals increases and more realistic constraints are considered, the problem becomes NP-hard.

Why simheuristics?

open access: yes
Many decision-making processes in our society involve NP-hard optimization problems. The largescale, dynamism, and uncertainty of these problems constrain the potential use of stand-alone optimization methods. The same applies for isolated simulation models, which do not have the potential to find optimal solutions in a combinatorial environment.
