Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Measurement of Similarity in Academic Contexts

open access: yesPublications, 2017
We propose some reflections, comments and suggestions about the measurement of similar and matched content in scientific papers and documents, and the need to develop appropriate tools and standards for an ethically fair and equitable treatment of ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

On the Markovian Similarity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Two finite Markov generators $L$ and $\widetilde L$ are said to be intertwined if there exists a Markov kernel $\Lambda$ such that $L\Lambda=\Lambda\widetilde L$. The goal of this paper is to investigate the equivalence relation between finite Markov generators obtained by imposing mutual intertwinings through invertible Markov kernels, in ...

On curvature and similarity.

open access: yesMichigan Mathematical Journal, 1983
Let \(B_ 1(\Omega)\) denote the class of bounded Hilbert space operators T such that \(T-\lambda I\) is onto and has one dimensional kernel for \(\lambda \in \Omega\) and such that \(\bigvee_{\lambda \in \Omega}\ker(T- \lambda I)\) is dense in the Hilbert space.

Similarity methods Proceedings

open access: yes, 1998
Similarity, analogy, and symmetry are attractive concepts and modeling methods in many areas of the pure and applied sciences. In recent years attention has been brought to similarity methods again, mostly due to new theoretical work and new applications,

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Efficient Similarity Search in Structured Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Modern database applications are characterized by two major aspects: the use of complex data types with internal structure and the need for new data analysis methods.

Similarity-based cognition: radical enactivism meets cognitive neuroscience

open access: yes, 2021
Similarity-based cognition is commonplace. It occurs whenever an agent or system exploits the similarities that hold between two or more items—e.g., events, processes, objects, and so on—in order to perform some cognitive task.

Dissimilarity is used as evidence of category membership in multidimensional perceptual categorization: a test of the similarity-dissimilarity generalized context model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In exemplar models of categorization, the similarity between an exemplar and category members constitutes evidence that the exemplar belongs to the category.
