Simple random sampling (SRS) is the simplest method of selecting a sample of n units out of N units by drawing units one by one with or without replacement. Every unit in the population has an equal probability of selection. This sampling method is useful whenever the underlined population is homogeneous.

In this book, we shall consider various sampling procedures (schemes) for selection of units in the sample. Since the objective of a survey is to make inferences about the population, a procedure that provides a precise estimator of the parameter of interest is desirable. Many sampling schemes have been developed to achieve this objective.

Computer generated simple random samples
Communications in Statistics - Simulation and Computation, 1991Three computer methods, namely the Random Draw, the Sequential and the Reservoir Methods, to obtain a simple random sample without replacement are reviewed. Several implementations of each method are given and criteria for the selection of an implementation are discussed. The most promising ones are compared for efficiency in their execution times.

Simple Random Sampling (SRS) is the simplest and most common method of selecting a sample, in which the sample is selected unit by unit, with equal probability of selection for each unit at each draw. In other words, simple random sampling is a method of selecting a sample s of n units from a population Ω of size N by giving equal probability of ...
