Design of a Teat Cup Attachment Robot for Automatic Milking Systems

open access: yesAgriculture, 2023
Automatic milking systems (AMSs) for medium and large dairy farms in China require manual assistance to attach the teat cup, which greatly affects the milking efficiency and labor costs. In this regard, it is necessary to realize the automatic completion

Analysing discrete event simulation modelling activities applied in manufacturing system design [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Organised by: Cranfield UniversityIn manufacturing industry, Discrete Event Simulation (DES) is applied in just a small fraction of the cases where it could give significant value. The complexity of the DES technology itself is one barrier to achieving

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

New immersive workflows for design and production : improvements to distributed collaboration for ideation, sketching, simulation and 3D printing

open access: yes, 2021
Today, there is a lot of hype about new technologies such as immersive virtual reality (VR). After more than five decades, the unfulfilled prophecy that VR would be available to everybody seems to be nearby.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Design and simulation of mechanical ventilators

open access: yesChaos, Solitons & Fractals, 2021
During this period of COVID-19 pandemic, the lack of medical equipment (like ventilators) leads to complications arising in the medical field. A low-cost ventilator seems to be an alternative substitute to fill the lacking. This paper presents a numerical analysis for predicting the delivered parameters of a low-cost mechanical ventilator.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

The effect of voltage on accuracy in electrochemical micromachining under two-tone sinusoidal signal

open access: yesElectrochemistry Communications
Electrochemical micromachining (ECMM) is a non-traditional technology in the field of machining, which has excellent machining quality. Ultra short pulse power supply is widely used in electrochemical micro machining, and shortening the pulse width is ...
