Detecting differential item functioning in presence of multilevel data: do methods accounting for multilevel data structure make a DIFference?

open access: yesFrontiers in Education
Assessment practices are, among other things, concerned with issues of fairness and appropriate score interpretation, in particular when making claims about subgroup differences in performance are of interest. In order to make such claims, a psychometric

Modeling and simulation of data communication networks using SARA [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
The selection of an appropriate simulation language can have a profound impact on the success of a simulation study. The available options range from domain-specific simulation languages to general-purpose programming languages. These languages are often

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Aggregating a Renewable Power Station Into a Single Generator for Quick Small-Signal Stability Evaluation

open access: yesIEEE Access
In this paper, a single-generator aggregated model (SGAM) of a renewable power station (RPS) is derived for the quick especially simulation-based evaluation of small-signal stability. The common scenario that the generators in the station are of the same

Investigating distributed simulation at the Ford motor company [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Engine production is a complex process that requires the manufacturing and assembly of a wide variety of components to create a varied product mix. Simulation plays a key role in the planning process of a new production line to determine if it can meet ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Electrophoresis of Janus Particles: a Molecular Dynamics simulation study

open access: yes, 2016
In this work, we use Molecular Dynamics and Lattice-Boltzmann simulations to study the properties of charged Janus particles in an electric field. We show that for relatively small net charge and thick electrostatic diffuse layer mobilities of Janus ...

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.
