MBE-grown 1550 nm wafer-fused VCSELs for large data rate and energy efficient communication

open access: yesJPhys Photonics
We report on the progress made in the development of 1550 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for data transmission applications. These lasers were grown using molecular beam epitaxy and manufactured through wafer fusion.

Single-mode fiber length for wavefront filtering

open access: yes, 2008
Stellar nulling interferometry offers the possibility of direct imaging of extrasolar planets necessary for the detection of extra-terrestrial life. Achieving optimum performance from the interferometers requires that the wavefronts of light reaching the

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

1.06 µm picosecond pulsed, normal dispersion pumping for generating efficient broadband infrared supercontinuum in meter-length single-mode tellurite holey fiber with high Raman gain coefficient

open access: yes, 2011
We investigate efficient broadband infrared supercontinuum generation in meter-length single-mode small-core tellurite holey fiber. The fiber is pumped by 1.06µm picosecond pulses in the normal dispersion region.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

High Purcell factor photonic crystal cavities for single photon sources [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Enhancement of spontaneous emission is of crucial importance in the design of high efficiency single photon sources. This can be achieved by creating defect cavities with both high Q and small effective mode volume, which results in a high Purcell factor.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
