Single-Mode–Multimode–Single-Mode Optical Fiber Sensing Structure With Quasi-Two-Mode Fibers

IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 2018
This paper reviews some aspects of optical fiber sensors based on a single-mode (SM)-multimode (MM)-SM structure and reports on the realization of temperature sensors in which the MM section is made by a quasi-two mode fiber. Two different realizations are compared that rely on: 1) a bend-insensitive fiber operated in the second optical communication ...

Single-mode fiber components

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1987
A variety of optical components have been made directly from single-mode fibers. These components can be combined to construct in-line all-fiber systems such as fiber gyroscopes, fiber Raman lasers, local area networks, or coherent lightwave systems. This paper reviews the present state of passive and active single-mode fiber components.

Expanded single mode fiber

OFC 2001. Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit. Technical Digest Postconference Edition (IEEE Cat. 01CH37171), 2001
We present a solution to maintain an expanded mode in the extremity of a single mode fiber by using a piece-of multimode step index fiber. With a 25 /spl mu/m spot size, the average connection loss is 0.36 dB (without Fresnel reflection) for a multimode section length inferior to 5 cm.

Single-mode fiber coupler

Applied Optics, 1981
This paper describes the fabrication process and coupling principle of a single-mode fiber coupler. Precise etching properties of the fibers used are presented. Fiber etching is shown to result in smooth surfaces. Coupling is seen to vary with the refractive index of the material separating the fiber cores.

Polarization maintaining Single-mode fibers

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 1981
Polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers will find application in acoustooptic sensors and fiber gyroscopes. In this study both stress-induced birefringence and elliptical core polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers were developed and evaluated.

Single-mode fiber measurements

IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 1986
In this invited tutorial review paper on single-mode fiber measurements, I discuss the various methods used to characterize the following important transmission parameters of single-mode fibers: attenuation, cut-off wavelength, mode-field diameter and chromatic dispersion.

Single Mode Fiber Optic Components

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1981
In the process of studying single-mode fiber optic systems it became rapidly apparent a few years ago that it would be desirable to perform a number of functions with in-line components, which would allow for signal processing without the removal of the optical signal from the fiber.

Single-mode fiber-optic polarizer

Optics Letters, 1980
A technique is presented for the fabrication of high-quality single-mode fiber-optic polarizers. Properties of polarizers made using this technique include extinction ratios in excess of 60 dB as well as low loss for the desired polarization.

Single-mode optical fiber cable

Applied Optics, 1979
A single-mode optical fiber cable was manufactured; loss increase characteristics due to cabling were evaluated. The existence of wide V-value regions without cabling loss increases is shown by a suitable selection of fiber parameters and optical wavelengths.

Single-mode optical fiber goniometer

Optics Letters, 1992
A two-element single-mode optical fiber goniometer that uses graded-index microlens receivers is presented that measures the angular orientation of a remote laser. The goniometer exhibits a sensitivity of 1.0 V/mrad and a calculated shot-noise-limited angular resolution of 1.0 nrad/ radicalHz.
