Applied Optics, 1981
This paper describes the fabrication process and coupling principle of a single-mode fiber coupler. Precise etching properties of the fibers used are presented. Fiber etching is shown to result in smooth surfaces. Coupling is seen to vary with the refractive index of the material separating the fiber cores.

Single-mode optical waveguides
Applied Optics, 1979An efficient and powerful technique has been developed to treat the problem of wave propagation along arbitrarily shaped single-mode dielectric waveguides with inhomogeneous index variations in the cross-sectional plane. This technique is based on a modified finite-element method.

Investigation on Single-Mode-Multimode-Single-Mode Fiber Structure
2011 Symposium on Photonics and Optoelectronics (SOPO), 2011The multimode interference (MMI) theory and corresponding re-imaging phenomena occurring in a single - mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) fiber structure is investigated. And the commercially available beam propagation method (BPM) have been adapted and analyzed to model the light propagation in this structure.

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1987
A variety of optical components have been made directly from single-mode fibers. These components can be combined to construct in-line all-fiber systems such as fiber gyroscopes, fiber Raman lasers, local area networks, or coherent lightwave systems. This paper reviews the present state of passive and active single-mode fiber components.

We present a solution to maintain an expanded mode in the extremity of a single mode fiber by using a piece-of multimode step index fiber. With a 25 /spl mu/m spot size, the average connection loss is 0.36 dB (without Fresnel reflection) for a multimode section length inferior to 5 cm.

Single-Mode–Multimode–Single-Mode Optical Fiber Sensing Structure With Quasi-Two-Mode Fibers
IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 2018This paper reviews some aspects of optical fiber sensors based on a single-mode (SM)-multimode (MM)-SM structure and reports on the realization of temperature sensors in which the MM section is made by a quasi-two mode fiber. Two different realizations are compared that rely on: 1) a bend-insensitive fiber operated in the second optical communication ...

Polarization maintaining Single-mode fibers
Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 1981Polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers will find application in acoustooptic sensors and fiber gyroscopes. In this study both stress-induced birefringence and elliptical core polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers were developed and evaluated.

Attaching single-mode polarization-preserving fiber to single-mode semiconductor lasers
Applied Optics, 1984The coupling of a semiconductor laser as a coherent well-polarized source to birefringent polarization-maintaining fiber is an important step in exploiting the unique characteristics of this waveguiding medium. The total light output of most semiconductor lasers is relatively poorly polarized yielding extinction ratios of the order of 10–12 dB. We wish

Tapered Mode Multiplexers for Single Mode to Multi Mode Fibre Mode Transitions
Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2015Three-mode multiplexers were made by post-processing existing SMF-28 fibres. The input was three identical SMFs which were fused together and adiabatically tapered to form a multimode output core. The light was converted to the LP 01 and two LP 11 with low loss (0.6–0.7 dB). The mode multiplexers were broadband.
