Single-Mode Optical Fiber Characterization
Optical Engineering, 1985The measurement of the relevant parameters of single-mode optical fibers (namely, cutoff wavelength, mode field diameter, chromatic dispersion, and refractive index profile) is discussed, with explicit reference both to the work carried out within the Comite Consultatif International Telephonique et Telegraphique (CCITT) and to original techniques ...

Single-mode fiber-optic demultiplexer
Soviet Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1987A study was made of the properties of fused single-mode biconical couplers fabricated in a high-frequency electric discharge. A multiplexer–demultiplexer was constructed for the first time with an interval of 1.5 nm between the channels, channel isolation of 20 dB, and excess losses of 0.2 dB.

Nonmechanical optical switch for single-mode fibers
Applied Optics, 1982This paper introduces a bistable nonmechanical optical switch for single-mode optical fibers. A l-input/2-output device for the l-microm wavelength range, the optical losses of the switch are independent of the polarization state in the input fiber. The insertion losses for the optical signal from the input fiber to the output fiber are 1.4 dB and the ...

Single-polarization single-mode optical fibers
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1981Strictly speaking, an ordinary axially symmetrical single-mode fiber is a "two-mode" fiber because two orthogonally polarized HE 11 modes can be propagated in it. This fact results in the instability of the polarization state of the propagated mode when geometrical perturbation exists in the fiber, and also the so-called polarization mode dispersion ...

Single mode optical fiber sensors
1995Single mode fibers are used for sensing when extreme sensitivity is required or when a well defined polarization of light is needed at a remote sensing point. Most sensors which use single mode fibers are of the intrinsic type (i.e. the action of the measurand on the light occurs within the fiber itself). The sensitivity advantage of single mode fibers

Polarization optics of twisted single-mode fibers
Applied Optics, 1979In twisted single-mode optical fibers the polarization of light is affected by an elastooptically induced optical activity and by a modification of any linear birefringence present. These effects are discussed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. The activity/twist ratio is alpha/tau approximately 0.13 ...

Birefringent optical filters in single-mode fiber
Optics Letters, 1981In-line fiber-optic spectral-bandpass filters with one, two, three, and four elements are designed in analogy to the Sole filters of bulk optics by bending the fiber into the form of small coils, which are rotated to suitable angles and arranged between polarizers.

Single-Mode Fiber Optical Sensors
1987Single-mode optical fibers can be used to carry coherent light in any kind of interferometric arrangement. External action on the fiber may change the phase of the light propagating through the fiber. Fiber optical sensors employ this type of interferometry, together with sophisticated opto-electronic detection, to measure different kinds of physical ...

Coupling starlight into single-mode fiber optics
Applied Optics, 1988We have calculated the efficiency with which starlight can be coupled into a single-mode fiber optic that is placed in the focal plane of a telescope. The calculations are performed for a wide range of seeing conditions, with and without rapid image stabilization, and for a wide range of wavelengths. The dependence of coupling efficiency on the f-ratio

Single-mode fiber-optic isolator
Integrated Optics and Optical Fiber Communication, 1981Optical isolation between the forward and back-scattered waves is essential in many optical circuits. The use of fibers as optical isolators in a fiber-optics circuit is advantageous. The present work reports on the use of single-mode fibers for optical isolation through the magnetooptic Faraday rotation of the polarization. The new method is practical
