Electronics for single photon avalanche diode arrays
This is the second of two serial papers dealing with single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) topics. Aim of the series is to discuss in depth the features and device structures of the array chip we developed (in the first paper) and the required fast ...

Single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) for 1.5 μm photon counting applications
Journal of Modern Optics, 2007The paper reports on the design and characterization of InGaAs/InP single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) for photon counting applications at wavelengths near 1.5 µm. It is shown how lower internal electric field amplitudes can lead to reduced dark count rates, but at the expense of degraded afterpulsing behaviour and larger timing jitter.

Scintillating fibers readout by Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPAD) for space applications
SPIE Proceedings, 2012We present the design and performances of a radiation detector based on plastic scintillating fibers with doubleside readout by means of large-area Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPAD). This can be the basic step toward the realization of a large-area, cost-effective position sensitive detector to be employed in future space gammaray observatories ...

Single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) VLC system and application to downhole monitoring
2014 IEEE Global Communications Conference, 2014In this paper, it is demonstrated for the first time that the problem of continuous downhole monitoring in the oil and gas industry is effectively addressed by the use of visible light communication (VLC). As a reliable, flexible and low-cost technique, VLC can fulfill a critical need of operators to maintain production efficiency and optimize gas well

Monolithic Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes: SPADs
2011The art of creating monolithic single-photon photodetectors is a mix of design skills and device physics knowledge, and it requires an understanding of the mechanisms underlying single-photon detection in highly complex integrated systems. This chapter begins with the fundamentals of avalanching, the basics for integration of avalanche photodiodes ...

For the first time, heterogeneous integration of InGaAs/InAlAs single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) with Si photonics was realized and demonstrated through a low temperature die-to-die bonding technique. Together with the adoption of a triple-mesa structure in SPADs which not only avoids the surface exposure to the high electric field but also ...
