Abstract This book is an anthology on topics in the grammar of Chinese (Sinitic) languages. The aim of the book is to meld historical and typological approaches in the examination of grammatical phenomena in order to show the extent to which both earlier stages of Chinese, as well as the modern dialects, differ from standard Mandarin.

Abstract Sinitic languages are known for their SVO order and mostly isolating morphology. This study addresses eleven languages of four different areas in Hunan, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Qinghai/Gansu provinces in China that possess SOV order and developed a postnominal flagging system.

Reading Sinitic Texts in the Vernaculars

Chinese texts first reached neighbouring societies in the form of raw texts, without any aids to understanding or even punctuation. Manuscripts recovered from Dunhuang, though, testify to the need for such aids either in the form of written punctuation for reading aloud or in the form of dry-point glosses made with a stylus or the wooden end of a brush:
