Double-strand break repair and homologous recombination in Schizosaccharomyces pombe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In recent years our understanding of double strand break repair and homologous recombination in Schizosaccharomyces pombe has increased significantly, and the identification of novel pathways and genes with homologues in higher eukaryotes has increased ...

Targeting Genome Maintenance Defects of Cancers Using Chain‐Terminating Nucleoside Analogs

open access: yesCancer Science, EarlyView.
Nucleoside analogs interfere with DNA replication either by their chain‐terminating properties or by serving as DNA damage on the template. The genome maintenance pathways required to maintain cellular tolerance to each nucleoside analog vary depending on the drug.

Destabilization of spindle assembly checkpoint causes aneuploidy during meiosis II in murine post-ovulatory aged oocytes

open access: yesThe Journal of Reproduction and Development, 2018
Mammalian oocyte quality degrades over time after ovulation in vitro, which can cause fatal defects such as chromosomal aneuploidy. As various oocyte manipulations employed in assisted reproductive technology are time consuming, post-ovulatory aging is a

Chromosome condensation in mitosis and meiosis of rye (Secale cereale L.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Structural investigation and morphometry of meiotic chromosomes by scanning electron microscopy (in comparison to light microscopy) of all stages of condensation of meiosis I + II show remarkable differences during chromosome condensation in mitosis and ...

Transcription Factor TCF12‐Mediated Maternal Gene Expressions in Mouse Oocyte Are Prerequisites of Successful Fertilisation and Zygotic Genome Activation

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Maternal TCF12 ensures the competence of fertilisation by controlling the expression of Astl and the proper location of cortical granules. Furthermore, maternal TCF12 maintains the phosphatase activity of PP2A by regulating the expression of Arpp19. Oocyte‐specific deletion of Tcf12 leads to fertilisation defects as well as ZGA failure at the 2‐cell ...

SOX30 Governs Synaptonemal Complex Assembly and Homologous Recombination in Male Meiosis

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
The transcription factor SOX30 directly binds promoter regions of SYCE1 and SYCE2 to mediate their transcriptional activation, thereby enabling proper assembly of central elements within the synaptonemal complex. Structural destabilisation of the synaptonemal complex in Sox30 KK spermatocytes triggers synaptic discontinuity, impairs homologous ...

Rad62 protein functionally and physically associates with the Smc5/Smc6 protein complex and is required for chromosome integrity and recombination repair in fission yeast [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Smc5 and Smc6 proteins form a heterodimeric SMC (structural maintenance of chromosome) protein complex like SMC1-SMC3 cohesin and SMC2-SMC4 condensin, and they associate with non-SMC proteins Nse1 and Nse2 stably and Rad60 transiently.

Developmental expression of Ap‐Vas proteins in aphids and flies reveals their evolutionary roles in insects

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Duplication of vas genes is universally observed in aphids, and phylogenetic analysis indicates that this event predates the divergence of Aphididae and Phylloxeridae. Ap‐vas1 is germline‐specific, whereas Ap‐vas2–4 exhibit somatic expression, indicating functional divergence during aphid embryogenesis.

A single cohesin complex performs mitotic and meiotic functions in the protist tetrahymena.

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2013
The cohesion of sister chromatids in the interval between chromosome replication and anaphase is important for preventing the precocious separation, and hence nondisjunction, of chromatids.

Quantitative cytogenetics reveals molecular stoichiometry and longitudinal organization of meiotic chromosome axes and loops.

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2020
During meiosis, chromosomes adopt a specialized organization involving assembly of a cohesin-based axis along their lengths, with DNA loops emanating from this axis.
