Properties of amylases from midguts of larvae of Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilus granarius
Insect Biochemistry, 1983Abstract Properties of amylases in homogenates of midguts of larvae of the granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius (L.), and maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motchulsky, were studied. Amylases from both species were active in mildly acid buffers. The pH optima were 4.75 for S. zeamais and 5.0 for S. granarius.

Abstract DNAs from the endosymbiotes of two species of grain weevils, Sitophilus oryzae and S. zeamais, were separated from host-weevil DNA and purified by cesium chloride gradient centrifugation. Endosymbiote DNA was identified by hybridization with a probe of the gene encoding the 16S rRNA of Escherichia coli.

The Canadian Entomologist, 1964
Weevils of the genus Sitophilus are known to harbour within them certain structures (supposedly micro-organisms) that seem, on present evidence, to supply the host weevil with beneficial but not essential nutrients: the phenomenon of either symbiosis or mutualism. The micro-organisms occur in cells called “mycetocytes”.

Laboratory trials were conducted in wheat grain to assess the effectiveness of low temperature (5 degrees C), applied at intervals of 5, 7, 9, 11, 20, 25, 30 and 35 days (d), as a control measure for stored product insect pests of the genus Sitophilus, and compared the results with the impacts of 7 d pre-acclimation at 15 degrees C and non-acclimation.
