Semantics, situation

2018
Situation semantics attempts to provide systematic and philosophically coherent accounts of the meanings of various constructions that philosophers and linguists find important. It is based on the old idea that sentences stand for facts or something like them.

A Semantic Approach for Learning Situation Detection

2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications, 2014
A number of ubiquitous systems are considering how to deal with situation-awareness to act in a personalized manner according to user's needs. Indeed, most of the research efforts in situation-awareness are generally focused on the implementation of common characteristics, differing basically on the relevant context observed and how this contextual ...

Analyzing V+Adj in Situation Semantics

2003
Sentences with V+Adj format (VA-statements) have the same syntax structure, whereas their semantic structures are always different owing to the semantic pointer of the adjective of V+Adj. In this paper we separate the verb and the adjective and start from the semantics of a VA-statement.

Situated legal systems and their operational semantics

Artificial Intelligence and Law, 2015
This work adopts H. Kelsen's concept of legal system, proposes a formal definition for such notion, and introduces an operational semantical framework for legal systems that are (structurally and operationally) situated in agent societies. Agent societies are defined.

The semantic challenge for situation assessments

2005 7th International Conference on Information Fusion, 2005
In relation to situation assessments in a deconstructed JDL model, one confronts the question, "What symbols should be used and how do those symbols acquire meaning?"-previously termed "the semantic challenge" for information fusion. The paper shows how meaning can be assigned to symbols by formal theories with logics because they constrain the number ...

Generalized Quantification in Situation Semantics

2002
This paper extends the grammar presented in Loukanova (2002, this volume) to cover NL expressions that contain multiple quantificational NPs, restrictive relative clauses, and intensional verbs. The grammar rules use a quantificational operator, which moves quantifier representations from the storage to the basis.

Compositionality and omniscience in situation semantics

1991
We have defined the syntax and semantics for the language Determiner-Free Aliass of Barwise and Perry using a compositional definition in the same style of MS. The interpretation of a sentence is defined as a constraint on situations and required to be computationally expressed. A situation is a finite collection of facts about the world. The notion of

Situated Cognition in the Semantic Web Era

2008
The challenge of situated cognition mounted by Clancey and others 20 years ago seems to have had little impact on the technical development of AI systems. However, the hopes for the Semantic Web also seem far from being realised in much the same way as too much was expected of expert systems, and again this seems to be because of the situated nature of

A Framework for Semantic Recommendations in Situational Applications

2011
Information overload is an increasingly important concern as users access and generate steadily growing amounts of data. Besides, enterprise applications tend to grow more and more complex which hinders their usability and impacts business users' productivity. Personalization and recommender systems can help address these issues, by predicting items of
