Shear Strength of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Beams without Stirrups—A Review Based on a Database

open access: yesBuildings
This paper presents a comprehensive study on ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) beams without stirrups, where the test data of 487 beams were collected, and an experimental database was established. Four distinct shear strength calculation models for

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Simulation of size effects by a phase field model for fracture

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics Letters, 2014
In phase field fracture models the value of the order parameter distinguishes between broken and undamaged material. At crack faces the order parameter interpolates smoothly between these two states of the material, which can be regarded as phases.

Size and shape after-effects: Same or different mechanism? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The shape-frequency and shape-amplitude after-effects, or SFAE and SAAE, are shifts in the perceived shape-frequency and perceived shape-amplitude of a sinusoidal test contour following adaptation to a similar-shaped contour.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Enabling High‐Performance Electrode Materials for Potassium‐Ion Batteries: Ionic Transport, Size and Electro–Chemo–Mechanical Effects

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Potassium‐ion batteries, which possess unique advantages such as lower K+/K redox potential compared to sodium and superior interfacial charge transfer dynamics, demonstrate considerable viability for grid‐level energy storage deployment.

Investigation of Variability of Flaw Strength Distributions on Brittle SiC Ceramic

open access: yesCeramics
The present paper investigates flaw strength distributions established using various flexural tests on batches of SiC bar test specimens, namely four-point bending as well as three-point bending tests with different span lengths.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Effects of climate on size structure and functioning of aquatic food webs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In aquatic food webs, the role of body size is notoriously strong. It is also well known that temperature has an effect on body size. For instance, Bergmann’s rule states that body size increases from warm to cold climates.
