Ice-rich slurries can account for the remarkably low friction of ice skates
Ice skates are remarkably slippery across a wide range of conditions. We propose, based on earlier observations and new modeling, that an ice-rich slurry forms rapidly beneath a skate blade during each stride to lubricate the interface.

Comparative demography of skates: life-history correlates of productivity and implications for management. [PDF]
Age-structured demographic models were constructed based on empirical estimates of longevity and maturity for five deepwater Bering Sea skates to investigate how observed differences in life history parameters affect population growth rates.

Morphological description of deepwater skate Bathyraja trachura from the North-West Pacific
Morphological description is given for deepwater skates Bathyraja trachura caught in the North-West Pacific in 1980–1989, both juveniles and adults. Counts for vertebras, pectoral fin, teeth rows, and intestinal valves are presented.

Grid systems separate fish species primarily through physical means: fish size and body shape. On Georges Bank off the northeast USA, many species of flounders are overfished, and their catch needs to be reduced.

Exploring variability in the diet of depredating sperm whales in the Gulf of Alaska through stable isotope analysis [PDF]
Sperm whales interact with commercially important groundfish fisheries offshore in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA). This study aims to use stable isotope analysis to better understand the trophic variability of sperm whales and their potential prey, and to use ...

The mechanics underlying ice–skate friction remain uncertain despite over a century of study. In the 1930s, the theory of self-lubrication from frictional heat supplanted an earlier hypothesis that pressure melting governed skate friction. More recently,
