Morphological and Molecular Diversity of Phytoplankton in Beibu Gulf, Northern South China Sea. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study explored phytoplankton diversity and environmental drivers in Beibu Gulf based on morphology and metabarcoding. The findings reveal that morphology better reflected phytoplankton abundance while metabarcoding revealed the actual phytoplankton diversity.

Effect of the Extracts of Sargassum fusiforme on Red Tide Microalgae in East China Sea

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
This study examined the effects of extracts of hijiki (Sargassum fusiforme) on the growth and physiology of three species of red tide microalgae (Prorocentrum donghaiensis, Skeletonema costatum, and Heterosigma akashiwo) that commonly grow in the East ...

Comparative analysis of full-length mitochondrial genomes of five Skeletonema species reveals conserved genome organization and recent speciation

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2021
Background Skeletonema species are prominent primary producers, some of which can also cause massive harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal waters under specific environmental conditions.

The response of diatom central carbon metabolism to nitrogen starvation is different from that of green algae and higher plants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The availability of nitrogen varies greatly in the ocean and limits primary productivity over large areas. Diatoms, a group of phytoplankton that are responsible for about 20% of global carbon fixation, respond rapidly to influxes of nitrate and are ...

Studies on the Autoinhibitor Produced by Skeletonema costatum-II. Isolation and Identification of an Autoinhibitor Produced by Skeletonema costatum.

open access: yesNIPPON SUISAN GAKKAISHI, 1992
An autoinhibitor produced by Skeletonema costatum was extracted with ethyl acetate from the cultured medium. The extract dissolved in diluted aqueous NaOH was gel-filtered on Sephadex G-15 with water. The fractions which inhibited the growth of S. costatum were extracted with ethyl acetate, and the extracts were separated by preparative thin-layer ...
