Skin Normal Force Calibration Using Vacuum Bags [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
The paper presents a proof of concept to calibrate iCub's skin using vacuum bags. The method's main idea consists in inserting the skin in a vacuum bag, and then decreasing the pressure in the bag to create a uniform pressure distribution on the skin surface. Acquisition and data processing of the bag pressure and sensors' measured capacitance allow us

MIF as an oncogenic driver of low‐heterogeneity melanomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Shvefel and colleagues identified tumor‐secreted macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) as an upregulated cytokine that mediates immune resistance in melanomas with low‐intratumoral heterogeneity. MIF and its functional paralogue D‐dopachrome tautomerase (D‐DT or MIF‐2) have overlapping but nonidentical signaling functions and are hypothesized to

Phenotypic continuum of NFU1‐related disorders

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Volume 9, Issue 12, Page 2025-2035, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Bi‐allelic variants in Iron–Sulfur Cluster Scaffold (NFU1) have previously been associated with multiple mitochondrial dysfunctions syndrome 1 (MMDS1) characterized by early‐onset rapidly fatal leukoencephalopathy. We report 19 affected individuals from 10 independent families with ultra‐rare bi‐allelic NFU1 missense variants associated with a

Flagellate dermatitis following consumption of shiitake mushroom

open access: yesDermatology Reports, 2011
Japanese dermatologists were the first to describe the very characteristic flagellate dermatitis following consumption of under-cooked or raw shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes).

Ubiquitination of transcription factors in cancer: unveiling therapeutic potential

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In cancer, dysregulated ubiquitination of transcription factors contributes to the uncontrolled growth and survival characteristics of tumors. Tumor suppressors are degraded by aberrant ubiquitination, or oncogenic transcription factors gain stability through ubiquitination, thereby promoting tumorigenesis.

The clinical spectrum of SMA‐PME and in vitro normalization of its cellular ceramide profile

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Volume 9, Issue 12, Page 1941-1952, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Objective The objectives of this study were to define the clinical and biochemical spectrum of spinal muscular atrophy with progressive myoclonic epilepsy (SMA‐PME) and to determine if aberrant cellular ceramide accumulation could be normalized by enzyme replacement.

Estimating Skin Tone and Effects on Classification Performance in Dermatology Datasets [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Recent advances in computer vision and deep learning have led to breakthroughs in the development of automated skin image analysis. In particular, skin cancer classification models have achieved performance higher than trained expert dermatologists. However, no attempt has been made to evaluate the consistency in performance of machine learning models ...

Environment and the Skin

open access: yesMedical Clinics of North America, 1977
The skin is an important organ of defense adaptation and a portal of entry for xenobiotics. It is vulnerable to physical, chemical, and biologic agents and capable of expressing responses to these agents in a variety of pathologic patterns. These patterns are characterized by morphologic and functional features which are elicited by careful examination

Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...
