Skin Texture Recognition Using Neural Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
Skin recognition is used in many applications ranging from algorithms for face detection, hand gesture analysis, and to objectionable image filtering. In this work a skin recognition system was developed and tested. While many skin segmentation algorithms relay on skin color, our work relies on both skin color and texture features (features derives ...

The effect of an emollient containing urea, ceramide NP, and lactate on skin barrier structure and function in older people with dry skin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Xerosis affects up to 75% of older people and develops as a result of a skin barrier defect. Emollients are widely used to treat xerosis; however, there is limited understanding of the differences between them and their effects on the skin barrier in ...

TOMM20 as a driver of cancer aggressiveness via oxidative phosphorylation, maintenance of a reduced state, and resistance to apoptosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TOMM20 increases cancer aggressiveness by maintaining a reduced state with increased NADH and NADPH levels, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and apoptosis resistance while reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Conversely, CRISPR‐Cas9 knockdown of TOMM20 alters these cancer‐aggressive traits.

Automatic Skin Lesion Segmentation using Semi-supervised Learning Technique [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers and each year million cases of skin cancer are treated. Treating and curing skin cancer is easy, if it is diagnosed and treated at an early stage. In this work we propose an automatic technique for skin lesion segmentation in dermoscopic images which helps in classifying the skin cancer types.

Auscultating heart and breath sounds through patients’ gowns: who does this and does it matter? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background Doctors are taught to auscultate with the stethoscope applied to the skin, but in practice may be seen applying the stethoscope to the gown.

Transcriptome‐wide analysis of circRNA and RBP profiles and their molecular relevance for GBM

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CircRNAs are differentially expressed in glioblastoma primary tumors and might serve as therapeutic targets and diagnostic markers. The investigation of circRNA and RNA‐binding proteins (RBPs) interactions shows that distinct RBPs play a role in circRNA biogenesis and function.

Assessment of the current practice of antibiotic skin testing in a tertiary Hospital in United Arab Emirates

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2011
Introduction: Skin testing can be a useful diagnostic tool to identify patients who are allergic to penicillin. Procedures for skin testing in the United Arab Emirates have not been standardized. The aim of this study was to examine the current practice

Enhanced skin colour classifier using RGB Ratio model [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
Skin colour detection is frequently been used for searching people, face detection, pornographic filtering and hand tracking. The presence of skin or non-skin in digital image can be determined by manipulating pixels colour or pixels texture. The main problem in skin colour detection is to represent the skin colour distribution model that is invariant ...
