The paper by Heimler et al1 concerning thermal environmental effects on growth and increase in skinfold thickness in premature infants was of interest to us in relation to our own work on macronutrient and energy accretion in the very low-birth-weight preterm infant.

Skinfold Thickness in Neonates
Neonatology, 1974Birth weight as an index of neonatal health needs to be supplemented by other objective measurements, particularly in the case of light-for-dates neonates, where inaccuracies in estimates of gestation confound the problem. Skinfold thicknesses were taken using a Harpenden caliper to obtain further indices of neonatal well-being.

Effects of skin thickness and skinfold compressibility on skinfold thickness measurement
American Journal of Human Biology, 1992AbstractVariability in both skin thickness and skinfold compressibility affects the relationship between the skinfold caliper reading at a particular site on the body and the actual adipose thickness at that site, thus inducing error in the estimation of body fatness.

Examination of the skinfold compressibility and skinfold thickness relationship
American Journal of Human Biology, 1993AbstractThis study examined the relationship between skinfold compressibility and skinfold thickness while proposing a 3‐caliper technique for the estimation of uncompressed skinfold thickness. Skinfold and ultrasound measurements of skin‐plus‐adipose tissue were made at seven sites on 15 females (mean age 22.0 yr) and 13 males (mean age 23.2 yr.) The ...
