An overlooked brown dwarf neighbour (T7.5 at d~5pc) of the Sun and two additional T dwarfs at about 10pc

open access: yes, 2013
Although many new brown dwarf (BD) neighbours have recently been discovered thanks to new sky surveys in the mid- and near-infrared (MIR, NIR), their numbers are still more than five times lower than those of stars in the same volume.

Astrometry of Large Sky Surveys [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1995
One of the major uses of the Large Sky Surveys such as the Palomar and SERC Schmidt Surveys is the derivation of positions for faint objects discovered in the course of other surveys. The HST Guide Star Catalogue has proved to be of great help in deriving positions for such objects, but the well-known, and unavoidable, systematic errors in the GSC ...

Template‐Confined Synthesis of Shape‐Engineered Single‐Crystal Gold Microplates in Lithographically‐Defined Polymeric Patterns

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐crystal gold microplates are high‐performance nanomaterials with an impressive wafer‐based application space. Progress has, however, been tempered by an inability to exert synthetic control over microplate size, shape, and positioning. In this work, control over these parameters is demonstrated using a seed‐mediated synthesis that both confines ...

Broadband Spectral Modeling of Prompt Emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts Observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Optical observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) contemporaneous with their prompt high-energy emission are rare, but they can provide insights into the physical processes underlying these explosive events.

UCAC3 Proper Motion Survey. II. Discovery Of New Proper Motion Stars In UCAC3 With 0.40" yr^-1 > mu >= 0.18" yr^-1 Between Declinations -47 deg and 00 deg

open access: yes, 2011
We present 474 new proper motion stellar systems in the southern sky having no previously known components, with 0.40" yr^-1 > mu >= 0.18" yr^-1 between declinations -47 deg and 00 deg. In this second paper utilizing the U.S.

Chiral Phase Change Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates reversible, non‐volatile phase transitions in chiral Ge2${\rm Ge}_2$Sb2${\rm Sb}_2$Te5${\rm Te}_5$ (GST) nanohelices for high‐speed optical modulation of chirality and dynamic control of the state of polarization (SOP). The chiral nanostructures are fabricated using a highly directional, wafer‐scale physical vapor deposition ...

Photometric Analysis of Asteroids in the Phocaea Region

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
The Phocaea asteroid family, one of the large ancient families located in the inner main belt, may be the sources of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) due to the nearby 3:1 mean motion resonance with Jupiter, the ν 6 secular resonance, and the Yarkovsky and ...

Dye‐Initiated Chirped Cholesteric Polymer Networks Exhibiting Broadband Dissipative Chiral Photonic Bands

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dye‐based photoinitiator acting as a structure‐directing element, guides the formation of a cholesteric polymer network that behaves as a chirped photonic structure with dissipative chiral coupling. Photopolymerization freezes a depth‐dependent helical pitch, broadening the Bragg resonance spectrum.

Exploring Unobscured Quasi-stellar Objects in the Southern Hemisphere with KS4

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
We present a catalog of unobscured quasi-stellar object (QSO) candidates in the Southern Hemisphere from the early interim data of the KMTNet Synoptic Survey of Southern Sky (KS4).

Vorticity‐Driven µ‐Platelet Rotation and Selective Packing for Vertical Thermal–Electrical Interconnects

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We introduce a capillary‐filtering‐based particle‐filling (CFPF) process that simultaneously forms vertical thermal pathways and electrical vias within µ‐pores. In situ microfluidic analysis reveals that capillary‐driven velocity gradients generate vorticity that governs µ‐platelet rotation and vertical alignment.
