The Sloan Digital Sky Survey [PDF]
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is making a multi-colour, three dimensional map of the nearby Universe. The survey is in two parts. The first part is imaging one quarter of the sky in five colours from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared. In this imaging survey we expect to detect around 50 million galaxies to a magnitude limit g ~ 23.

I review the development of UV and EUV astronomy, covering the spectral range from 5 to 300 nm, with emphasis on sky surveys for discrete sources. I discuss studies which resulted in lists of sources observed by imaging and deliberately omit most spectroscopic studies.

The Westerbork Northern Sky Survey [PDF]
The WEsterbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS) is a large–sky survey being carried out at 92 and 49 cm with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). At 92 cm WENSS will cover the sky north of declination +30° (an area of 10,000 square degrees) to a limiting (5σ) flux density of about 15-20 mJy. Both linear and circular polarization data is obtained.
