Cool Kitchen: Processing Starch and Eggshell Powder into Sustainable Coatings for Passive Daytime Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A food‐grade cooling composite made from starch and recycled eggshell powder offers a scalable, ultra‐low‐cost solution for passive daytime radiative cooling. Easily prepared using basic kitchen tools, this material empowers communities, even in areas with limited infrastructure, to stay cooler during worsening summer heat waves.

2D and 3D urban morphology effects on land surface temperature and thermal comfort in arid environments

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Remote Sensing and Space Sciences
Urbanization significantly alters the thermal environment of cities, particularly in hot-arid regions where extreme heat and limited vegetation intensify thermal stress.

3D Skyview: a 3D GIS tool for urban canyon geometry and solar access [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This paper uses a 3D - GIS environment for simulating a spatial representation of urban canyons in place of many other high cost -equipment methods for determining Sky View Factors (SVF), allowing also the visualization of urban solar access by ...

The Australian Space Eye: studying the history of galaxy formation with a CubeSat

open access: yes, 2016
The Australian Space Eye is a proposed astronomical telescope based on a 6U CubeSat platform. The Space Eye will exploit the low level of systematic errors achievable with a small space based telescope to enable high accuracy measurements of the optical ...

Temporal Effects of Environmental Characteristics on Urban Air Temperature: The Influence of the Sky View Factor [PDF]

open access: yesSustainability, 2016
This study examines the relationship between air temperature and urban environment indices, mainly focusing on sky view factor (SVF) in Seoul, Korea. We use air temperature data observed from 295 automatic weather stations (AWS) during the day and night in Seoul.

Digital Actuation Control of Soft Robotic Origami With Self‐Folding Liquid Crystal Elastomer Hinges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐folding soft‐rigid hybrid robotic origami is enabled by liquid crystal elastomer actuators with embedded Joule heating and closed‐loop digital control. Digitally addressable hinges provide reversible and programmable transitions between distinct folded states while maintaining actuation performance at high cycle counts (over 1500).

Walking Behavior of Older Adults and Air Pollution: The Contribution of the Built Environment

open access: yesBuildings, 2023
Although an increase in walking is recommended to improve physical activity and public health, especially among older adults, the frequency of outdoor pedestrian activities, including walking, should be reduced when there is increased air pollution ...

Ferroelectricity in Antiferromagnetic Wurtzite Nitrides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We establish MnSiN2${\rm MnSiN}_2$ and MnGeN2${\rm MnGeN}_2$ as aristotypes of a new multiferroic wurtzite family that simultaneously exhibits ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism with altermagnetic spin splitting. By strategically substituting alkaline‐earth metals, we predict new materials with coexisting switchable polarization, spin texture, and

Effects of Foliage and Sky View Factor on the Urban Thermal Environment.

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Meteorology, 2001
We investigated the effects of urban sky view factor and foliage view factor on the thermal environment, based on field experiments in the street canyons of Osaka. Mean radiation temperature (MRT) and physiologically equivalent temperature (PET) are used as the indices of the thermal environment.

2D Magnetic and Topological Quantum Materials and Devices for Ultralow Power Spintronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
2D magnets and topological quantum materials enable ultralow‐power spintronics by combining robust magnetic order with symmetry‐protected, Berry‐curvature‐driven transport. Fundamentals of 2D anisotropy and spin‐orbit‐coupling induced band inversion are linked to scalable growth and vdW stacking.
