The geological signature of a slab tear below the Aegean [PDF]
International audienceIn this paper we explore the geology of the Aegean region in the Miocene to identify the geological signature of a first-order slab tear observed in all tomographic models.

Dynamics of slab tear faults: Insights from numerical modelling [PDF]
Tear resistance at the edge of a slab is an important parameter controlling the evolution of subduction zones. However, compared with other subduction parameters such as plate strength, plate viscosity, plate thickness and trench width, the dynamics of ...

Seismic evidence for a slab tear at the Puerto Rico Trench [PDF]
AbstractThe fore‐arc region of the northeast Caribbean plate north of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands has been the site of numerous seismic swarms since at least 1976. A 6 month deployment of five ocean bottom seismographs recorded two such tightly clustered swarms, along with additional events.

Tearing the Plate Recent seismic data show a widely variable geometry of subduction: Some plates penetrate deep into the mantle; others bend and become horizontal at 670 kilometers near a prominent phase boundary. Obayashi et al. (p.

A Near-Vertical Slab Tear in the Southeastern Solomon Islands
2023The Solomon Islands is one of the most seismically active areas in the southern Pacific with high earthquake hazard potential. The regional seismic network, equipped with six broadband seismic stations, was constructed as late as October 2018.

Seismicity and structure in central Mexico: Evidence for a possible slab tear in the South Cocos plate [PDF]
The morphology of the transition from flat to normal subduction in eastern central Mexico is explored using intraslab earthquakes recorded by temporary and permanent regional seismic arrays.

A near-vertical slab tear in southeastern Solomon Islands
2023Mw 6.3 and 6.0 earthquakes occurred on January 27 and 29 in 2020 in the southeastern Solomon Islands which is one of the most seismically active areas in the southern Pacific. To investigate the seismogenic mechanism and structure of the southeastern Solomon Islands, we locate the foreshocks-main-shock-aftershocks sequence of two moderate earthquakes ...

Aegean tectonics: Strain localisation, slab tearing and trench retreat
Tectonophysics, 2013Abstract We review the geodynamic evolution of the Aegean–Anatolia region and discuss strain localisation there over geological times. From Late Eocene to Present, crustal deformation in the Aegean backarc has localised progressively during slab retreat.

The first-order configuration of the Himalayan orogen is defined by the northward motion of the Indian Plate, whether directly "underplating" under the Tibetan crust or "subducting" beneath a mantle wedge. Our 3D S-wave receiver-functions newly reveal orogen-perpendicular tearing or warping of the Indian Plate.

Slab Tear Beneath the Sunda Strait
Island ArcABSTRACT Slab tearing plays a critical role in subduction zones worldwide, as it facilitates mantle upwelling, influences magma generation, and leads to the formation of tensional structures, which may create favorable conditions for geothermal potential.
