Quaternary magmatism above a slab tear, Northern Andes of Colombia

2022

The north Andean block evidences by its shallow to intermediate seismicity a juxtaposition of a southern, relatively steeply dipping slab segment with a correlating volcanic arc and a northern flat slab domain, where a margin-parallel volcanic arc became extinct since the Late Miocene.

Variational theory of drift and tearing eigenmodes in slab geometry

The Physics of Fluids, 1978
A variational formulation of the radial eigenmode equations describing kink-tearing modes, drift-tearing modes, and drift modes, in slab geometry, is derived. The formalism is shown to provide accurate dispersion relations for a wide range of problems, with fewer approxmimations and less analytical effort than conventional methods require. Furthermore,

Subduction disruption, slab tears: ca. 1 Ma true collision of an ~30‐km‐thick oceanic plateau segment recorded by Yakutat slab nascent tear magmatism

Terra Nova, 2022
AbstractDistinguishing the initiation of actual collision from flat‐slab subduction of oceanic buoyant highs along convergent margins is elusive because both can lead to inboard deformation and disrupt magmatic arcs. Volcanoes with nascent tear magmatic signatures provide a means to document both the occurrence and timing of actual oceanic buoyant high

Vertical slab tearing controlled by the rheology of subducting oceanic plates

2021

Vertical tearing of subducting oceanic slabs plays an important role in the subduction dynamic worldwide, accommodating slabs motion and segmentation in subduction zones. In previous studies, several models have been proposed for the origin of vertical slab tearing – they were related to variations in the slab age ...

Landscape response at the edge of a tearing slab

Tearing at the edges of subducted slabs permits the migration of narrow orogenic arcs. Dynamic models predict that the active segment of subvertical tears migrates in the sense opposite subduction modifying the topography and tectonic regime along its path.

Tearing mode stability in a sheared slab model of the tokamak plasma

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2006
The tearing mode instability facilitates the formation of magnetic islands and thereby inhibits the performance of fusion plasmas by increasing the energy fluxes from the plasma core. The growth of magnetic islands is related to currents flowing parallel to the magnetic field and, for long narrow islands (with the width comparable to the ion Larmor ...

Signals of slab breakoff- and tearing in the stratigraphic architecture of a foreland basin

2023
A significant change in the architecture of peripheral pro-foreland basins observed in all natural examples is the flysch to molasse transition (i.e., shift from underfilled- to overfilled conditions). Forcing mechanisms for pro-foreland basin architecture include changes in sediment supply from the adjacent growing orogen and flexural subsidence in ...

Resistive tearing in line-tied magnetic fields: Slab geometry

Solar Physics, 1989
The resistive tearing-mode instability of a current carrying plasma sheet is investigated including the stabilising photospheric line-tying boundary conditions. This end condition prohibits a single Fourier mode and so requires a series expansion in harmonics of the fundamental sheet excitation.

Kinematics and magmatism of slab tear faults

2008
Tectonic activity in convergent plate boundaries commonly involves backward migration (rollback) of narrow subducting slabs and segmentation of subduction zones through slab tearing. In this study, we combined seismic tomography data and kinematic reconstructions to obtain a deeper insight into the complex geodynamics of Italian magmatism.

Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis formation and evolution dominated by slab tear of Indian slab

Tectonic syntaxes in continent-continent collision belts are often featured by sharply curving orogenic syntaxis zones. Within and around the plate corners, tectonic mountain building processes and surface processes interact extensively. The formation and evolution of these tectonic syntaxes, namely plate corners, remain debatable.
