Analysis of the dielectric slab waveguide
Proceedings of WESCON '93, 2002Dielectric waveguides are widely used in optical communications systems, both in integrated optics and as transmission lines for off-chip interconnection. The dielectric slab waveguide can serve as a model in approximating the behavior of waveguides which have one cross-sectional dimension larger than the other, such as the strip waveguide or the ...

Porous silicon slab waveguides
Conference on Electron Devices, 2005 Spanish, 2005A multilayer slab waveguide, based on porous silicon technology, is theoretically studied. The waveguide consists of a core with refractive index 2.5 and two layers with refractive index 1.5 that are the cladding. We develop the mathematical expressions for the analysis of this waveguide structure and for the calculation of the dispersion relation.

Anisotropic Slabs in Rectangular Waveguides
IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 1970The problem of electromagnetic wave propagation in a rectangular waveguide containing anisotropic slabs was considered by several authors. Their treatments, however, only cover particular cases (lossless media, TE/sub m0/ modes); they do not provide all the information required for the design of microwave devices such as ferrite isolators, which are ...

Modal Analysis of Slab Waveguides
1977It is well known that a beam of light propagating in a homogeneous medium suffers divergence as a result of diffraction, and is thus unable to traverse appreciable distances without loss of intensity in the central portion of the beam. For many applications it is essential to avoid this divergence, or in other words guide the propagation of the beam ...

Properties of a chiral slab waveguide
Pure and Applied Optics: Journal of the European Optical Society Part A, 1997The symmetrized constitutive relations of Condon are used to find possible solutions in a waveguide formed from an isotropic chiral slab. Two eigenstates are found, related to positive and negative helicity plane-wave modes in an unbounded chiral medium. These eigenstates propagate along the slab, but are standing waves across the slab. Combinations of

Scaling rules for slab waveguides with nonlinear substrate
Applied Optics, 1987A mode power measure is introduced to characterize optical slab waveguides with nonlinear substrate or cover. Together with the normalized film thickness and asymmetry coefficient, it allows for determining guiding properties in a way analogous to the description of Kogelnik and Ramaswamy for the linear waveguides and permits an easy interpretation and

Spatial modulation instability in a Kerr slab waveguide
Optics Letters, 2001We report the observation of noise-initiated modulational instability in AlGaAs slab waveguides at 1.55 microm . Experiments were performed with the local, ultrafast Kerr nonlinearity at half the bandgap. The agreement between experiment and theory for the periodicity versus intensity was good.

Excitation of a Curved Slab Waveguide
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1979The problem of exciting a surface wave on a hollow dielectric cylinder by an electric current line source is solved. Using the method of Watson, fields are expressed in terms of the residue series and the integral, which correspond to discrete and continuous modes of the curved slab waveguide.

Appendix B: The Slab Waveguide
2009The phenomenal growth in Internet traffic has lead to a huge increase in demand for data transmission capacity on a worldwide level. As a result, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology emerged, which makes it possible to transmit a large number of optical channels on a single optical fiber.

Pure phase bistability with a nonlinear slab waveguide
Optics Letters, 1988We describe the bistable behavior of a nonlinear triple-boundary slab waveguide. We show that, in addition to the previously reported reflected intensity bistability, this device exhibits bistability in the phase of the reflected beam. It is shown that pure phase signal bistability is possible.
