Could Mesh Placement Solve the Problem of High Radiological and Symptomatic Recurrence in Patients with a Large Sliding Hiatal Hernia? A Prospective Comparative Study [PDF]

open access: yesAin-Shams Journal of Surgery
Introduction: Large sliding Hiatal Hernia (HH) is associated with an exceedingly high incidence of recurrenceafter surgery. An ongoing controversy exists while managing it regarding the best surgical technique.

Operating Behavior of Sliding Planet Gear Bearings for Wind Turbine Gearbox Applications—Part I: Basic Relations

open access: yesLubricants, 2021
The application of sliding planet gear bearings in wind turbine gearboxes has become more common in recent years. Assuming practically applied helix angles, the gear mesh of the planet stage causes high force and moment loads for these bearings involving

A fundamental investigation of the interaction and impact of controlled torque ripples on gear mesh dynamics

open access: yesApplied and Computational Mechanics, 2023
Gear trains are plagued by self-excited vibrations that are concentrated at the mesh frequency and its harmonics due to their varying mesh stiffness and deviations from the ideal involute profile.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Sliding mesh simulations of a wind turbine rotor with actuator line lattice‐Boltzmann method

open access: yesWind Energy
Simulating entire wind farms with an actuator line model requires significant computational effort, especially if one is interested in wake dynamics and wants to resolve the tip vortices.

Variable Stiffness Flexure Structures Enabled by Phase‐Change Gallium and Adhesive Interfacial Locking for Soft Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A flexure‐based variable stiffness structure is developed by integrating phase‐change modulation and adhesive interfacial locking of gallium. The design enables a wide stiffness variability, transitioning from soft, flexible behavior to rigid, load‐supporting performance.
