Distributed manipulation with stick-slip contact
Proceedings 2003 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2003) (Cat. No.03CH37453), 2004Actuator arrays are planar arrangements of two degree-of-freedom actuators that cooperatively translate and orient objects for efficient manipulation. This paper derives the equations of motion for an object with the friction interface switching between slip and no-slip contact at each actuator. A controller derived from kinematics is presented and its

Slip detection with distributed-type tactile sensor
2004 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37566), 2005This paper describes development of a distributed-type tactile sensor. This sensor arranges many sensor elements that can measure a triaxial force on the same plane. Therefore, the action force can be measured with the pressure distribution. Since the relative movement of a sensor and a contacted object can be evaluated by measuring the pressure ...

Slip distribution and fracture in magnesium oxide
Philosophical Magazine, 1962Abstract It is shown that as-cleaved magnesium oxide may go through several distinguishable stages of deformation prior to fracture. The exact mechanism of fracture depends on the stage at which it actually occurs. In all cases fracture occurs by a dislocation configuration localizing strain energy near a sub-critical microcrack.

Stick-slip operation of the modular distributed manipulator system
Proceedings of the 1998 American Control Conference. ACC (IEEE Cat. No.98CH36207), 1998The modular distributed manipulator system (MDMS) is a novel materials handling system which is a fixed array of actuated wheels capable of inducing arbitrary motions in the plane. The wheels transport and manipulate objects that rest on the array. The motion of the object is determined by a combination of object weight distribution, actuator dynamics,

Earthquake‐Scaling Relationships from Geodetically Derived Slip Distributions
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2019AbstractEmpirical earthquake scaling relationships describe expected relationships between moment magnitude and various spatial descriptors of the earthquake rupture (along‐strike length, down‐dip width, rupture area, and peak and mean slip). These scaling relationships play important roles in many seismological, geological, and hazards‐assessment ...

Distribution of angular misfits in fault-slip data
Journal of Structural Geology, 1996The validity and the accuracy of a stress determination method based on fault-slip data inversion depends on how the misfits are defined and processed in the inversion procedure. To characterize major features of fault-slip data, angular misfits are simulated for both inherited faults and conjugate faults.

INTRINSIC MODE FUNCTIONS OF EARTHQUAKE SLIP DISTRIBUTION
Advances in Adaptive Data Analysis, 2010In this paper, empirical mode decomposition technique is used to analyze the spatial slip distribution of five past earthquakes. It is shown that the finite fault slip models exhibit five empirical modes of oscillation. The last intrinsic mode is positive and characterizes the non-stationary mean of the slip distribution.

Distributed Slip Model for Forward Modeling Strong Earthquakes
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2016We develop a generic finite‐fault source model for simulation of large earthquakes: the distributed slip model (DSM). Six geometric and seven kinematic parameters are used to describe a smooth pseudo‐Gaussian slip distribution, such that slip decays from peak slip within an elliptical rupture patch to zero at the borders of the patch.

Distribution of slip along an earthquake fault
Acta Seismologica Sinica, 2004Slip distribution of the 1979 Imperial Valley, 1989 Loma Prieta, 1992 Landers, 1994 Northridge, and 1995 Kobe earthquake shows a piece-wise Gutenberg-Richter’s law. For small slips, the b-value is near to 1; while for large slips, the b-value is larger than 1.
