Helmeted hornbill cranial kinesis: Balancing mobility and stability in a high‐impact joint

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 5, Page 1299-1312, May 2026.
Abstract Prokinesis—in which a craniofacial joint allows the rostrum to move relative to the braincase—is thought to confer diverse advantages in birds, mostly for feeding. A craniofacial joint would, however, be a weak link if cranial stability is important. Paradoxically, we have identified a craniofacial joint in helmeted hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil),

Experimental methods in chemical engineering: Atomic absorption spectrometry—AAS

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 104, Issue 5, Page 2206-2224, May 2026.
Abstract Elements absorb electromagnetic radiation (light) of a specific wavelength in proportion to the number of atoms in its path. As the atoms absorb this light energy, electrons rise from the ground state to an excited state. In atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), high temperatures produce clouds of atoms from the sample (atomization) and ...

3D‐Printed High‐Fidelity Pediatric Mannequin for Rigid and Flexible Bronchoscopy Training on Difficult Airways

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
The article describes the design and manufacturing process of a novel pediatric high‐fidelity pathological mannequin for clinical training on unanticipated difficult airway management using rigid and flexible bronchoscopy. The mannequin has been developed from the CT scans of a 19‐month‐old polysyndromic patient (Crouzon Syndrome), thanks to the ...

Antenna Design and Wavelength Modulation in Microwave Tumor Ablation: A Multiphysics Study on SAR Optimization Across Pulmonary Targets

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
Microwave coagulation therapy achieves lesion treatment through thermal effects (tissue heating coagulation) and nonthermal effects (cell activity regulation). ABSTRACT Microwave ablation (MWA) has become an increasingly important minimally invasive treatment option for pulmonary lesions, though its clinical performance remains limited by tissue ...

Persistent Evapotranspiration in a Shallow Boreal Shield Peatland Despite Summer Drought: Implications for Ecohydrological Resilience

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 5, May 2026.
We examine energy balance and evapotranspiration dynamics in a shallow peatland as an analogue for projected climate change impacts in deeper peatlands. Across nine growing seasons, we document similar total evapotranspiration between dry and wet years, leading to net moisture deficit in some dry years.
