Fast and slow twitch units in a human muscle [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, 1971
A study has been made of the isometric twitches of single motor units in the extensor hallucis brevis (EHB) muscle in man. The twitch contraction times ranged from 35 to 98 msec and the pooled results indicated the presence of at least two types of unit.

KMT5B is required for early motor development

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2022
Disruptive variants in lysine methyl transferase 5B (KMT5B/SUV4-20H1) have been identified as likely-pathogenic among humans with neurodevelopmental phenotypes including motor deficits (i.e., hypotonia and motor delay). However, the role that this enzyme

Exploring the super-relaxed state of myosin in myofibrils from fast-twitch, slow-twitch, and cardiac muscle

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2022
Muscle myosin heads, in the absence of actin, have been shown to exist in two states, the relaxed (turnover ∼0.05 s−1) and super-relaxed states (SRX, 0.005 s−1) using a simple fluorescent ATP chase assay (Hooijman, P. et al (2011) Biophys.

Impact of TIEG1 on the structural properties of fast- and slow-twitch skeletal muscle. [PDF]

open access: yesMuscle & nerve, 2017
Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β)-inducible early gene-1 (TIEG1) is a transcription factor that is highly expressed in skeletal muscle. The purpose of this study was to characterize the structural properties of both fast-twitch (EDL) and slow-twitch (soleus) muscles in the hindlimb of TIEG1-deficient (TIEG1-/- ) mice.Ten slow and 10 fast muscles ...

Actions of caffeine on fast‐ and slow‐twitch muscles of the rat. [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 1989
1. The effects of caffeine (0.2‐20 mmol l‐1) have been examined on calcium transients (measured with aequorin) and isometric force in intact bundles of fibres from soleus (slow‐twitch) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL; fast‐twitch) muscles of the rat. 2.

“Biqi” Bayberry Extract Promotes Skeletal Muscle Fiber Type Remodeling by Increasing Fast Myofiber Formation via the Akt/FoxO1 Pathway in Mice

open access: yesFoods, 2023
Bayberry is known to be a rich source of natural flavonoids and has been reported to have various health-promoting abilities. However, its function on regulating skeletal muscle fiber type remains unclear.

Role of the JP45-Calsequestrin Complex on Calcium Entry in Slow Twitch Skeletal Muscles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We exploited a variety of mouse models to assess the roles of JP45-CASQ1 (CASQ, calsequestrin) and JP45-CASQ2 on calcium entry in slow twitch muscles.

Energetics of fast‐ and slow‐twitch muscles of the mouse.

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 1993
1. The energetic cost of work performance by mouse fast‐ and slow‐twitch muscle was assessed by measuring the rates of thermal and mechanical energy liberation of the muscles at 21 degrees C. Thermal energy (heat) liberation was measured using a fast‐responding thermopile. 2.

Noninvasive Estimation of Myosin Heavy Chain Composition in Human Skeletal Muscle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Purpose: Information on muscle fiber type composition is of great importance in muscle physiology and athletic performance. Because there are only a few techniques available that noninvasively and accurately provide an estimate of muscle fiber type ...
