What can a mean-field model tell us about the dynamics of the cortex? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this chapter we examine the dynamical behavior of a spatially homogeneous two-dimensional model of the cortex that incorporates membrane potential, synaptic flux rates and long- and short-range synaptic input, in two spatial dimensions, using ...

Closed-Loop Acoustic Stimulation During Sleep in Children With Epilepsy: A Hypothesis-Driven Novel Approach to Interact With Spike-Wave Activity and Pilot Data Assessing Feasibility

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2019
Slow waves, the electroencephalographic (EEG) hallmark of deep sleep, can be systematically manipulated by acoustic stimulation: stimulation time-locked to the down phase of slow waves reduces, whereas stimulation time-locked to the up phase increases ...

Propagation of Compressional Alfvén Waves in a Magnetized Pair Plasma Medium

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2022
The reductive perturbation approach was used to explore the nonlinear propagation of fast (compressive) and slow (rarefactive) electron–positron (EP) magnetoacoustic (EPMA) modes in an EP plasma medium. The solitary wave solution of the Korteweg-de Vries

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Large-scale cortical dynamics of sleep slow waves. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Slow waves constitute the main signature of sleep in the electroencephalogram (EEG). They reflect alternating periods of neuronal hyperpolarization and depolarization in cortical networks.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Energy Transfer from Magnetohydrodynamic-scale Slow-mode Waves to Kinetic-scale Ion Acoustic Waves

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Large-amplitude slow-mode waves are commonly observed near Earth’s magnetopause. Recent observations show that these waves can occur simultaneously with kinetic-scale ion acoustic waves (IAWs).

Waveguided modes in a planar structure «graphene – thin semiconductor film – graphene» [PDF]

open access: yesКомпьютерная оптика, 2020
We investigated optical-range waveguide modes propagating in a semiconductor film sandwiched between two graphene plates. The mode characteristics were shown to depend on the chemical potential of graphene and the film thickness.

On the Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability in Magnetohydrodynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is important in a wide variety of applications including inertial confinement fusion and astrophysical phenomena. In some of these applications, the fluids involved may be plasmas and hence be affected by magnetic fields.

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.
