First Analysis of Climate Forcing and Response to Updated Historical Anthropogenic Aerosol With the New CMIP7 Model ICON XPP

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract The simple plumes (SP) parameterization for anthropogenic aerosol effects on radiation and clouds has been used in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase six (CMIP6) and beyond. This study documents the new SP forcing data in preparation for use in CMIP phase seven (CMIP7) and its first application in the newly developed coupled ...

Daily Global Methane Super‐Emitter Detection and Source Identification With Sub‐Daily Tracking

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 8, 28 April 2025.
Abstract We use the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite instruments to retrieve atmospheric methane enhancements with 750 m resolution. We show that the three VIIRS instruments in orbit uniquely enhance tracking of methane super‐emission events with sub‐daily coverage. The VIIRS instrument on Suomi‐NPP and the TROPOMI instrument

A Neural Networks Approach for Volcanic Ash Detection in the 2019 Raikoke Eruption Using S3-SLSTR Data

open access: yes, 2022
In this work the classification of Sentinel-3 Sea and Land Surface Temperature (S3-SLSTR) images with a focus on volcanic cloud detection through a Neural Networks (NNs) approach is presented.Since the hazardous nature of eruptions, a fast and reliable ...

Harnessing Satellite Data Alone for Mapping Global Thermal Anisotropy

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 8, 28 April 2025.
Abstract Mapping thermal anisotropy across global lands is critical for advancing a wide range of Earth science studies. However, a comprehensive understanding of global thermal anisotropy intensity (TAI) and its governing factors remains missing. We introduce a novel data‐driven methodology to quantify global TAI exclusively using multi‐angle MODIS ...

Long‐Term Trend and Seasonal Cycles of Gap‐Free Downscaled Diurnal/Nocturnal LST and the Interaction to Functional Plant Trait Under Tropical Monsoon Climate

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 12, Issue 2, February 2025.
Abstract Land surface temperature (LST) monitoring via Earth observation constellation will become optimized and consistent with spatiotemporal‐explicit characteristics. Besides, scientific evidence for the interaction between LST and vegetation biophysical variables remains limited through spatial large‐scale assessment and seamless long‐term tracking.

Optimal estimation retrieval framework for daytime clear-sky total column water vapour from MTG-FCI near-infrared measurements [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques
A retrieval of total column water vapour (TCWV) from the new daytime, clear-sky near-infrared (NIR) measurements of the Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) onboard the geostationary satellite Meteosat Third Generation Imager (MTG-I, Meteosat-12) is presented.

CloudCatcher: citizen science can be used to help to crowd source a satellite cloud validation dataset

open access: yesWeather, Volume 80, Issue 1, Page 29-35, January 2025.
Earth observation images go through a process of cloud identification and the performance of these ‘cloud masks’ must be validated to assess performance accuracy and identify potential improvements. In this project, we investigated if this validation could be performed by citizen scientists.

Benefits and Lessons Learned from the Sentinel-3 Tandem Phase

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
During its commissioning phase, the Copernicus Sentinel-3B satellite has been placed in a tandem formation with Sentinel-3A for a period of 6 months. This configuration allowed a direct comparison of measurements obtained by the two satellites.

Structural and Dynamical Quality Assessment of Gap‐Filled Sea Surface Temperature Products

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 11, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract Previous studies that intercompared global Level‐4 (L4) sea surface temperature (SST) analyses were centered on the assessment of the accuracy and bias of SST by comparing them with independent near‐surface Argo profile temperature data. This type of assessment is centered on the absolute value of SST rather than on SST spatial properties ...
