Submicro-optics: big effects on a small scale
SPIE Proceedings, 2004Recent results of our studies into optical effects where sub-micron length scales play a pivotal role are presented. We start with a discussion of fine optical features produced by relatively large objects, and then move on to consider the big effects that can be produced by sub-micron structures.

Raising the Effectiveness of a "Small-Scale Economy"
Problems in Economics, 1986The USSR national economic complex is an intricate structural formation, each part of which performs its own functional role in the realization of society's production, technical, economic, and social tasks. The optimal functioning of the national economic complex presupposes the balanced development of its links in branch and regional aspects and from

Effects of small-scale turbulence on microalgae
Journal of Applied Phycology, 1990Turbulence flows are characterized by their viscous dissipation rates ɛ and the kinematic viscosity of the fluid ν, but the effects of turbulence on organisms such as microalgae smaller than the Kolmogorov inertial-viscous length scale LK ≡ (ν3/e)/14 depend on the stress τ ≡ µγ, where µ = ϱν is the dynamic viscosity, ρ is the density, and the rate-of ...

The effect of small-scale mobility on terahertz band communications
Proceedings of the 5th ACM International Conference on Nanoscale Computing and Communication, 2018The use of massive antenna arrays for creating extremely directive antenna radiation patterns is considered vital for overcoming high path loss and atmospheric absorption of terahertz links. However, high directivity also results in frequent misalignment of beams due to small-scale/micro-mobility of user equipment (UE), such as shakes and rotations ...

An Empirical Evaluation of Ground Effect for Small-Scale Rotorcraft
2018 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2018Ground effect refers to the apparent increase in lift that an aircraft experiences when it flies close to the ground. For helicopters, this effect has been modeled since the 1950's based on the work of Cheeseman and Bennett, perhaps the most common method for predicting hover performance due to ground effect.

The effect of Peruvian small‐scale fisheries on sunfishes (Molidae)
Journal of Fish Biology, 2018Reports were compiled of sunfish (family Molidae) by‐catch in Peruvian small‐scale fisheries and sunfish by‐catch rates were estimated using data from shore‐based and onboard monitoring programmes. A total of 114 sunfishes were reported in the longline and gillnet fisheries along the Peru coast from 2005 to 2017.

Effect of small-scale baryon inhomogeneity on cosmic nucleosynthesis
Physical Review D, 1989We consider the evolution of the nuclear abundances in a universe with inhomogeneities (induced by the quark-hadron phase transition) on a scale such that neutron diffusion is important before and during nucleosynthesis. We investigate a number of initial baryon density contrast ratios: R=10, 100, 1000; a number of high-density volume fractions: ${f}_ ...

Small Scale Processes and Macroscopic Effects in Collisionless Plasmas
Transport Theory and Statistical Physics, 2003Abstract In high temperature space and laboratory plasmas, energy, initially injected at large scales, is transferred towards small scales. In a number of cases these plasmas can be considered as almost collisionless and dissipative effects become important at length scales much smaller than those where kinetic effects come into play.
