Effect of small-scale structure on the dynamics of cosmic strings

Physical Review D, 1990
The effective equation of state for a string with short-wavelength perturbations is shown to be $\ensuremath{\mu}T={\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}^{2}$, where $\ensuremath{\mu}$ and $T$ are the mass density and tension in the rest frame of the string and ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}$ is the unperturbed string tension.

The effect of small‐scale hills on orographic drag

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2007
AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which the presence of hills with relatively short horizontal scales can influence the drag, due to mountain waves and flow blocking, exerted on the flow by larger‐scale mountains. Numerical simulations of stratified flow over mountains are presented for flow over orography described by ...

Small scale effects in metal cutting

1993
Many metal deformation processes can be successfully modelled by analytical methods which treat the material as a uniform, homogeneous continuum. In these processes the plastically deforming zone has dimensions which are of the same order as those of the workpiece, i.e. large on the metallurgical or crystallographic scale.

Small-Scale Acoustic Streaming Effects in Liquids

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1954
Observations (with low power microscope) have been made on isolated bubbles, forming on an inner wall of a specially devised liquid container, during irradiation with 10 kc sound. In the immediate bubble neighborhood circulatory streaming motions can often be seen.

The Effects of Small-Scale Heterogeneities on the Effective Dispersivity of Porous Medium

SPE Enhanced Oil Recovery Symposium, 1988
ABSTRACT Dispersivity affects the displacement and sweep efficiencies and the required slug size of a displacing fluid. Unfortunately, the dispersivity values estimated from field tests are a few orders of magnitude greater than the values obtained in laboratory tests.

The effect of small-scale morphology on thermal dynamics in coral microenvironments

Journal of Thermal Biology, 2019
The thermal microenvironments of corals is a topic of current interest given their relationship to coral bleaching. We present computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of corals with both smooth and rugged polyp surface topographies for two species of massive corals (Leptastrea purpurea and Platygyra sinensis) in order to predict their microscale ...

Studies of the effects of small-scale turbulence on phytoplankton

Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 1981
Nutrient-limited batch cultures of two marine phytoplankton have been subjected to aeration and varying rates of mechanical agitation and the effects of growth and uptake of14C and nutrients recorded. In both phosphate- and nitrate-limited cultures the lag period decreased with increasing agitation rate.

Effect of Schmidt number on small-scale passive scalar turbulence

Applied Mechanics Reviews, 2003
Previous reviews of the behavior of passive scalars which are convected and mixed by turbulent flows have focused primarily on the case when the Prandtl number Pr, or more generally, the Schmidt number Sc is around 1. The present review considers the extra effects which arise when Sc differs from 1. It focuses mainly on information obtained from direct

A Small-Scale Laboratory Dispersant Effectiveness Test

1978
A small-scale laboratory system is described in which known amounts of oil and dispersant are introduced on a water surface at a controlled temperature and turbulence and the dispersion behavior observed. Turbulence is provided by circulating an air current over the oil-water surface, thus simulating, to some extent, natural wave action and avoiding ...
