Characterization of a direct role of GnRHs in the control of spermiogenesis and steroidogenesis in the small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula

open access: yesGeneral and Comparative Endocrinology
Hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) regulates the production of gonadotropins, which control reproduction. In elasmobranchs, unlike other gnathostomes, GnRH is released into the systemic circulation to stimulate gonadotrope cells located in the ventral lobe of the pituitary.

Behavioural response thresholds of marine fish species for pulsed electric fields

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Electrical pulse trawling is an alternative to conventional beam trawling for common sole (Solea solea), with substantially less discards, lower fuel consumption, and reduced impact on the benthic ecosystem.

Metabolomic profiling of blood and seminal plasma in the small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula): A comparative study of aquarium and wild populations in the Valencia region

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
In chondrichthyans, despite males in ex situ conservation programs exhibiting good sperm quality, offspring production is confined to specific species.

Semi-pelagic Longline and Trammel Net Elasmobranch Catches in Southern Portugal: Catch Composition, Catch Rates and Discards [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In Portugal, elasmobranch landings have decreased substantially in recent years. In this work, elasmobranch catches in semi-pelagic longlines (1997 and 1998) were compared with those in trammel nets (2000) in the Algarve, southern Portugal areas.

INSIGHTS INTO THE EVOLUTION OF DOPAMINERGIC CONTROL OF REPRODUCTION: THE BRAIN-PITUITARY-GONADAL AXIS OF THE SMALL-SPOTTED CATSHARK SCYLIORHINUS CANICULA

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Histochemistry
In all vertebrates, reproduction is controlled by the brain–pituitary- gonadal (BPG) axis, which integrates environmental cues such as photoperiod and temperature with neural and gonadal functions to regulate gametogenesis and gamete maturation.
