Small‐Strain‐Shear Modulus of Soil by Dilatometer

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1990
A procedure is presented for estimating the small strain shear modulus \IG\N\dm\da\dx of soils based on flat dilatometer (DMT) test results. Previously published data from nine test sites at which both DMT and seismic tests were performed are used to develop a model.

Anisotropy in small-strain shear modulus of permafrost at rising temperatures

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 2019
Abstract Perennially frozen soils, or permafrost, exist extensively on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska and can reach up to 600 m deep. This paper describes the cryostructure of permafrost cores obtained from a deep borehole in this area, presents the shear wave velocities measured in different directions by the bender element method, exhibits the ...

Effect of soil microstructure on the small-strain shear modulus of saline soil

Arabian Journal of Geosciences, 2021
The behavior of soils at small strains (< 10−5) is of significant interest for geotechnical engineers. Compared with the small-strain properties of sand or clay, those of saline soil have been investigated less extensively and therefore remain poorly understood.

Influence of compaction on small-strain shear modulus of iron ore tailings

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Geotechnical Engineering, 2022
Understanding the geotechnical properties of iron ore tailings is one of the biggest challenges currently faced by the mining industry. The brittle behaviour of these tailings has brought the importance of small-strain stiffness to the geotechnical forefront.

Small-strain shear modulus of volcanic granular soil: An experimental investigation

Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 2016
While volcanic soils exist in many places around the world, their mechanical behavior is however less extensively studied as compared to the conventional soil type such as quartz sand and clay. This paper presents an experimental study investigating the small-strain shear modulus (G0) and associated shear wave velocity (Vs) of a volcanic granular soil ...

Effects of sand and water contents on the small-strain shear modulus of loess

Engineering Geology, 2019
Abstract Characterizing soil properties at small-strains ( −5 ) is a subject of long-standing interest for geotechnical engineers at both academic and practical levels. Compared to conventional soil types, such as sand or clay, the small-strain properties of loess are less extensively studied and remain poorly understood.

Modeling of the Small Strain Shear Modulus on a Fiber Reinforced Sand

2015
The mechanical behavior of fiber reinforced soils has been extensively studied in the last decades. Previous studies have shown that inclusion of fibers increases the shear strength of the reinforced soil. However in some cases the presence of fibers can reduce the stiffness of the composite material.

Small-strain shear modulus and liquefaction resistance of sand with carbonate precipitation

Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 2018
Abstract Innovative soil improvement methods providing more environmentally friendly solutions for liquefaction countermeasure techniques have emerged in recent years. One such technology is the enzymatically induced calcite precipitation (EICP). This study presents comprehensive experimental results to provide better understanding of the undrained ...

Small Strain Shear Modulus Equations for Zeolite–Cement Grouted Sands

Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2019
Cement production is an energetically demanding process and one of the most important sources of CO2 emission in the world. Therefore, replacing part of the cement with more environmentally friendly supplementary materials such as natural zeolite (NZ) is of great importance. The small strain shear modulus (G0) of soils is an essential parameter in many

Laboratory determination of small strain shear modulus of Auckland residual soil

2011
A small strain triaxial apparatus was developed which is capable of measuring accurately the small strain behaviour of soil. The system utilized three submersible miniature linear variable differential transducers (LVDTs), mounted on the periphery of the soil specimen. Furthermore, a bender element system was incorporated to provide an additional means
