Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Impact of completely histological remission on reducing flare-ups in moderate-to-severe, biologics-experienced ulcerative colitis patients with endoscopic remission

open access: yesJournal of the Formosan Medical Association
Background/purpose: Endoscopic remission is presently recognized as the standard therapeutic target in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). However, achieving histological remission is increasingly viewed as a pivotal objective.

Small bowel mesentery fibroma [PDF]

open access: yesSrpski Arhiv za Celokupno Lekarstvo, 2002
Fibromas are rarely localized in the abdomen, but almost always in the mesentery or omentum. We present a 63-year old woman in whom the examination of the upper abdominal pain showed a well distinct abdominal mass at the level of the lower edge of the ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Predictors and outcomes of hepatic decompensation following transarterial locoregional therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma

open access: yesScientific Reports
Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) are recognized locoregional therapies (LRTs) for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC).

Small bowel transplantation [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ, 1996
Unique problems but now standard treatment for small bowel insufficiency Intestinal transplantation is the logical alternative to definitive parenteral nutrition in patients with chronic intestinal failure after conditions such as necrotising enterocolitis or midgut volvulus. Long term parenteral nutrition is associated with complications such as liver

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Chronic constipation and acute small bowel obstruction due to small bowel encapsulation: A case report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, 2023
Key Clinical Message Peritoneal encapsulation is most of the time asymptomatic and is found incidentally, but when symptomatic it usually presents with bowel obstruction. CT scan is a gold standard for the diagnosis of bowel encapsulation.
