Influence of Surface Finish on the Tribological Performance of AlTiBN Coatings Deposited on Forming Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Microstructure Reconstruction in Battery Electrodes Using Machine Learning Based on Low‐Voltage Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy Tomography Images

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐voltage FIB‐SEM tomography combined with a image preprocessing pipeline improves phase contrast and enables reliable machine‐learning segmentation of conductive networks in lithium‐ion battery electrodes. Structural descriptors are extracted from segmented images, done semimanually and automated, and compared.

Simulating Speed in Language: Contributions from vision, audition and action

open access: yes, 2015
Embodied theories propose that understanding meaning in language requires the mental simulation of entities being referred to. These mental simulations would make use of the same modality-specific systems involved in perceiving and acting upon such ...

Exploration of Pseudobinary Alloys (Al–Mn)‐(Co–Fe–Ni) to Design High‐Entropy and Compositionally Complex Alloys to Stabilize the τ Phase in Al–Mn‐Based Ferromagnetic Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This experimental study investigates the thermodynamic limits of the Al–Mn τ ferromagnetic phase within complex‐composition alloys (CCAs). Using nine rare‐earth‐free compositions, it explores a broad region of the pseudobinary AlMnCoFeNi system. The results reveal intricate links between composition, phase stability, and magnetic behavior, highlighting

Model of zero sequence noise in small current grounding system

open access: yes, 2012
The reasons of appearing signals in the zero-sequence electric circuit with ungrounded neutral are presented. The literatures containing information about possible sources of noise, which can get into the circuit zero-sequence are analyzed.

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Small signal analysis of DC voltage control based on a virtual resistance of DC/DC converter integrated in a multiterminal DC grid

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission & Distribution
The future multi‐terminal direct‐current (MTDC) grid will require the interconnection of point‐to‐point high‐voltage (HV) DC links with different specifications such as DC voltage level, system grounding configuration and HVDC technology.

Experimental Characterization of Mycelium‐Based Composites Under Multiple Loading Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the mechanical response of mycelium‐based composites under compression, shear, and tension using mechanical testing and imaging methods. The comparison between unpressed and hot‐pressed specimens shows that hot pressing is associated with higher compression and shear stiffnesses.

Joint perception: gaze and beliefs about social context [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The way that we look at images is influenced by social context. Previously we demonstrated this phenomenon of joint perception. If lone participants believed that an unseen other person was also looking at the images they saw, it shifted the balance of ...
