Unusual Swelling Behavior of Hydrogels Modified with Spiropyran as Appendage or Crosslinker

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Not so innocent after all—spiropyran crosslinkers in methylenebisacrylamide‐crosslinked poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) hydrogels increase crosslinking density, but also, counterintuitively, increase swelling. Charge complexation, cooperative chemo‐mechanical effects, and aggregation may explain these observations.

Establishment of the Unified Maneuvering and Seakeeping Dynamic Model for Submarines Moving in Horizontal Plane near Free Surface

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
When a submarine moves near the free surface, the lift and drag characteristics that act on it are different compared to when in deep water; for example, waves on the free surface cause submarine motions that are not seen in deep water conditions and ...

Deformation and Degradation in 18650 Li‐Ion Cells Under Freeze‐Thaw Cycling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the impact of freezethaw degradation of 18650 cells via combined electrochemical and x‐ray imaging studies. High‐resolution synchrotron X‐ray tomography reveals deformation of the jelly‐roll structure and delamination of electrode active materials in cells cycled at 1C and 4C. These structural changes are quantitatively assessed

Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Soft Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) can be actuated via electromechanical, electrochemical, or electrothermal effects. a) Electromechanical effects include Maxwell stress, electrostriction, and the electroclinic effect. b) Electrochemical effects arise from electrode redox reactions.

PSLL and HPBW Minimisation in Time‐Variant FDA Using Sum‐of‐Sinc‐Functions‐Based Frequency Offsets

open access: yesIET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation
Beampattern of a frequency diverse array (FDA) is a function of time, range and angle. The shape of this beampattern is dependent on the frequency offsets (FO) that are applied to each element. These FO are sampled from a window function whose parameters

Artificial Neural Network for Glider Detection in a Marine Environment by Improving a CNN Vision Encoder

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Despite major economic and technological advances, much of the ocean remains unexplored, which has led to the use of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and gliders for surveying. ROVs and underwater gliders are essential for ocean data collection. Gliders,
