Design of a Deformable Smart Tire Using Soft Actuator
Volume 12: Advanced Materials: Design, Processing, Characterization, and Applications, 2019Abstract The unique functional properties of nickel-titanium Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) enable them to be used as actuators. This research paper demonstrates theoretically and experimentally the feasibility of using SMA in smart tires for a mobile robot. The design procedure for SMA as a coil spring actuator for a soft deformable wheel is

Physical Validation Testing of a Smart Tire Prototype for Estimation of Tire Forces
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2018<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The safety of ground vehicles is a matter of critical importance. Vehicle safety is enhanced with the use of control systems that mitigate the effect of unachievable demands from the driver, especially demands for tire forces that cannot be developed.

Self-tuning stochastic resonance energy harvester for smart tires
Active and Passive Smart Structures and Integrated Systems XII, 2018Energy harvesting from smart tire has been an influential topic for researchers over several years. In this paper, we propose novel energy harvester for smart tire taking advantage of adaptive tuning stochastic resonance. Compared to previous tire energy harvesters, it can generate large power and has wide bandwidth.

Development of an ESP Control Logic Based on Force Measurements Provided by Smart Tires
SAE International Journal of Passenger Cars - Mechanical Systems, 2013<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The present paper investigates possible enhancement of ESP performance associated with the use of smart tires. In particular a novel control logic based on a direct feedback on the longitudinal forces developed by the four tires is considered.

Tire visual inspection by active image sensing and smart feature extraction
2014 10th France-Japan/ 8th Europe-Asia Congress on Mecatronics (MECATRONICS2014- Tokyo), 2014In this paper, we propose a new visual inspection method that can analyze the exterior surface of rubber tires with the light stripe projection. Image sensing of the tire surface was implemented by setting the tire on the rotating table so that the normal pattern of the tire surface could be suppressed.

Smart Algorithm for a Tire Pneumatic Pressure Monitor Embedded in ABS Program
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1998<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper describes methods to attain a low cost tire pneumatic pressure monitor. We already established two kinds of algorithms for indirect detection of under-inflated tires without requiring any air pressure sensors. One method is to use a disturbance observer and the least mean square method.

Wireless Smart -Tires for Road Friction Measurement and Self State Determination
43rd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference, 2002Luna Innovations has begun development of a wireless, "Bluetooth" based "Smart-Tire" system for direct measurement of tire tread strain and other parameters, shown conceptually in Figure 1. Utilizing a prototype "Smart-Tire" implemented with fiber optic-based sensors, the measurement of skid onset in a tire has been successfully demonstrated in ...
