SMC (structural maintenance of chromosomes) protein complexes act in chromosome processing in all domains of life. In this issue, a study of the prokaryotic SMC complex Smc–ScpAB reveals an unanticipated asymmetry despite Smc forming a symmetric homodimer.

From the SmA to the Hexatic, Including the SmC*, SmC*A and SmC*re Phases: A 2H NMR Relaxation Study
ChemPhysChem, 2009AbstractThe molecular dynamics of a ferroelectric liquid crystal, denoted ZLL 7/*, is investigated by means of 2H NMR relaxation. The spin–lattice (T1Q and T1Z) and spin–spin (T2) relaxation times of two isotopomers of ZLL 7/*, labeled on the phenyl and biphenyl fragments, are measured and their behavior upon passing from the SmA to the hexatic phase ...

AbstractWe have undertaken a study of the 3-D spatial distribution of the older (τ ≥ 1–2 Gyr) stellar population lying beyond ~ 2 kpc in projected radial distance from the centre of the SMC. The study will eventually cover 120 square degrees including six overlapping Schmidt fields.

SMC is a system whose structure is intentionally changed with a discontinuous control which drives the phase trajectory to a stable hyperplane or manifold. The high-speed switching forces the state to slide along the surface until it converges.

The status of the forthcoming muon experiment at CERN for measuring the spin-dependent structure function of the neutron and of the proton is discussed. Expected accuracies for the evaluation of spin-related sum rules, in particular the Bjorken sum rule, are given.
